Never driven it or anything? I replied saying that car would be released

Apparently the funds can appear to be released but months later be removed
from your account once the bank realises the cheque was dodgy. In that case
I would have thought it the banks problem but apparently it's your fault
somehow.

Well, thats exactly why the deal faded ever so quickly. And clear funds
cannot be touched as far as my branch goes. 5 working days and the funds are
crystal clear.

Not possible in the AU banking system. Either it's accepted in the cheque
clearing system and cleared or it bounces. In the case of the building
society that I use, clearance takes 3 working days. If it hasn't bounced by
the end of the 3rd day, the funds are cleared. The account has 2 balances -
"available" and "actual". Uncleared cheques show up in the "actual" balance
but not in the "available" balance. If they bounce, a rejection transaction
removes it from the "actual" balance.

If it is a foreign cheque and doesn't have an AU referrer[1], it has to be
sent back to the country of origin through the clearing system and they don't
use express post... The funds won't be "available" until the cheque clears.

[1] Foreign banks can have an arrangement with an AU bank, whereby foreign
cheques drawn in AU$ are able to be validated through the bank and branch
referred to on the face of the cheque. Typically, this will be a head office
branch of a major AU bink, such as ANZ Melbourne. A cheque with a valid
referrer can be cleared in the same time as an AU cheque.

You're right about the non express element... when I had a couple of
USD cheques sent for collection the funds took about 5 weeks to appear
in my account.

Anyway, if the deposit is negotiated (conversion at time of deposit)
it's still possible for foreign currency cheques to bounce *after* you
have the funds marked as available and cleared. CBA puts an arbitrary
30 day hold on negotiated funds but it could still come back a month
later. (Not sure about now, but back in about 2002 their system was
buggy and could only track a single hold; if you deposited a second
foreign cheque the funds from the first became immediately available!)

Ask the buyer to pay by wire, this should only take a few business days
at most and the funds are cleared when they hit your account.

Not surprising at all, Troopy's aren't sold new in the USA so the only
way to get one is to import one.
When I bought my Hilux the dealer (Melbourne Toyota) was telling me they
sell quite a few late model Troopys to customers in the USA.
What year is yours?

Correct, I've been told the same thing by a Toyota dealer.

I've seen dual Cab Hilux diesels sell to US bidders, they still don't
sell for that much but then they have to add the shipping

they never got early diesel Hilux(Tacoma) or the dual cabs
I was on an email list back a couple of years ago and one of the members
went to South America for a holiday and was so excited that they got to
hire a dual cab Hilux for a week, he posted about 20 pics of it from all
angles

they lost the solid front axle in 85 so even an 85 model is worth
something to them especially if it's a dual cab and diesel

they did however get the V6 in the 87-88 models and the 4 litre V6 in
about 2003
they still get the 4Runner
