If its a van like a coaster, Car Licence.
If its a Bus, medium rigid
Dual wheels on back, heavy rigid.

If it's a bus (or on a truck chassis) under 4.5T GVM (eg SWB Coaster), car
licence.
If it's a bus (or on a truck chassis) over 4.5T but under 8T GVM (regardless
of axle config), Light Rigid licence.
If it's a bus (or on a truck chassis) over 8T with only 2 _axles_, Medium
Rigid licence.

Wrong. As long as the rear axle is only a single axle, it doesn't matter
whether it's single wheels or duals.
Heavy Rigid applies for rigid vehicles over 8T GVM with more than 2 axles,
regardless of whether they're single or dual tyres.

The state of infrastructure in New South Wales is a disgrace.

Meh. I guess a car licence is a licence to drive a tin can, so that
typo isn't too serious. :-p

Suggest you DL the relevant part of the traffic act for the state you reside and familiarise yourself with it. Your
question cannot be answered from the information that you have provided as each particular vehicle type has to be looked
at separately....

with any of those licence classes menttion by others, the towing of a
car trailer will be nothing special, no licence needed
one thing I do suggest
even if it doesn't require a truck licence maybe you should go get
yourself a light rigid truck licence anyway, just so you know that
driving a 3 tonne bus towing a 2 tonne trailer is so much different to
driving a Mazda Neo
the roads outside of the big cities are soo much narrower and you WILL
have B/Doubles coming at you at 100kph with only 12 inches of space
between your mirror and theirs
not something you should be doing without a bit of training

Just gotta watch out for the screwy logbook rules...
A vehicle under 12T GVM doesn't require a logbook (in NSW at least), but
if you hook up a trailer and the combination of GVM and ATM exceeds 12T,
you suddenly need a logbook, even if the truck and trailer are empty!!!
I know a wrecker with a large F-series (guess what he wrecks) who had an
empty car trailer behind the truck and was booked for not running a
logbook by an RTA IVR. Put the trailer on the back of the truck (it is
a tilt-tray) and it doesn't need the logbook!
