View Full Version : Deleted shortcut to file on desktop by accident!! HELP!!

Ext User(Victoria)

My 3yr son has changed the 'path' to a very important file that was on the
desktop of my computer. The icon has gone, and the search system cant find
any of the files it contained on the system, even in the 'hidden places'.
When I tried to open one of the files that was on my 'recent documents' it
says that the shortcut has been changed or removed, and that the files will
no longer work properly.

Please help, all my important files were in this one file, and it will take
me months to redo the work that was there. Any suggestions will be much
appreciated.

Thanks, Victoria.

RECOVERING DELETED FILES (After You Have Emptied the Recycle Bin)
Read the Aumha article, it's important in case your files have been deleted;
and download the freeware utility from aumha.org very powerful application.
Click on the second "here" link to download the application. It's very fast
and scans the drive in seconds, if you don't find your files type the file
type in the Search deleted files window (example. .xls, .doc etc) and copy
to recover files to another partition if possible. If you still don't find
your files there are other applications that can help. If nothing is found
among the deleted files, that may mean your files are simply lost, in that
case look among the file search applications or start with those if you have
reason to believe your files are only lost.

Thank you so much, I have now located the folder-but it still won't let me
open it.

It says:

Problem with Shortcut
The item 'blabla' that this shortcut refers to has been changed or moved,so
this shortcut will no longer work properly.

Nearest match:
c:/jhkhgajfmjgfmb

Do you want to fix shortcut to this point or delete it?

When I try and open one of the folders files from my recent documents list,
it appears with an internet 'e' symbol next to it, and says to check the path
exists.

Help!

The problem consists on the folder being moved to another location, so the
short cut now does not point to the right place... according to the message
you get you need to edit the shortcut (see below) or return the folder to
it's original location or create a new shortcut to replace the old one and
leave the folder where it is now.
(to edit (reroute) the shortcut; right click on the
shortcut\properties\shortcut tab\destination\and edit the route for the
folder location).

To find the folder location do as follows: Start\Run\Search\select all files
and folders\type the folder name\when the search stops, right click on the
found folder and select "Open containing folder" (on top of the contextual
mouse menu). Or in Recent Documents right click on the folder or file and
see the original location in recent doc properties, and next return the
found folder to that location. (You can copy the route and paste it in a
word document, so you can't momentarily forget the location).

Once you get to the file or folder to create a new shortcut right click on
it and select create a new shortcut then copy it to the usual location or
drag it to the start button and up to the start menu.

In case you still have trouble accesing the folder, the only remaining
question is the "e" icon, so I have to ask; what fileformat is it? rspond
to this if you still need help.

a) What level of user account are you using? If a regular user account, use
ad administrative account.
b) What file format is it (Example: Excel, Word, and Power Point etc)?
c) Word per word what does the message say?
d) How many folder-in-subfolder times is it located in? If any file is
located too many times within subfolders it won't open and you need to bring
it out closer to the C:\drive... if that were the case the file itself will
probably not allow you to move it either, but you can try bringing the
containing folder out, if that can't be done go to a higher folder until it
is possible.
e) If you are using the NTFS file system and the message refers to a
permissions limitation, you may have to use ad administrative account and
take ownership of the folder and files included.
