Hi all
I am in the process of building a dedicated HT room.
I am looking for advice on cabling.
I have a High ( Professional ) quality component cable which I plan on
running from a dvd palyer to Projector. approx 8M in length. ( 5 wire
heavily sheilded and about 20mm diamiter )
I have not purchased a DVD palyer / Projector or Amp as yet and so could go
for one with HDMI/DVI as well as component inputs. ( I believe most have
these now anyway)
Is there any merit in using HDMI/DVI instead of the component cable which I
already have.
I know that I would have to buy an HDMI amp if I needed it to do the
switching for me and that would be an additional cost.
I am just looking for comments on the merits of HDMI I suppose.
Many Thanks

Yes of course, better video quality. In the case of HDMI you also get to use
one cable for digital Video/digital audio.

If I was wiring up room for future HT use I would put in an HDMI cable as
well as component + optical/coaxial cable etc..., whether I was using it at
the time or not.
Only problem to check out is cable length since both DVI and HDMI are length
sensitive but your friendly neighbourhood HI-FI store would help you with
that (and I don't mean JB-HiFi or Hardly Normal).

HDMI/DVI is digital, and component is anologue. So if you are using a
digital display device, (projector, plasma,LCD). Why would you carry
the image in an analogue format via component cabling?
If you use component, your DVD player coverts the digital sorce from
the disc into analogue, by the meens of a DAC (Digital to Analogue
converter). Then your display changes the analogue back digital. The
way to produce the best quality image from your digital display is to
keep the signal digital all the way - HDMI/DVI
The length issues with HDMI cable are over and probably didn't even
exist as it is carrying a digital signal, I have seen the cable in
100ft lengths.

The amp that currently offerring HDMI/DVI, composit and component does
upscaling only
for HDMI sources and does only component upconversion for other sources, so
HDMI input
of av amp is mostly a convenient feature rather than improving the overall
picture quality of
the projected image. I'm currently running my 3 years old av amp for sound
and using a dvdo scaler
to run as my video hub which I run short runs of cable from individual
component to dvdo and
let dvdo scaler upconvert all video signal to 720p then send to my
projector using 10m HDMI cable.

100ft! The longest I've seen on Ebay is 10m and that was $150. Any idea where I can get a 15m cable at a rasonable price?

not sure where to get the proprietary plugs but making a cable would be easy
enough once they're sourced. a Google search would find them for sure

With regards to the quality difference between HDMI/DVI and component it is not as simple as digital vs analogue.
If you compare the picture from a variety of devices using HDMI/DVI and analogue you will very quickly realise that it is dependent on the equipment far more than the cable.
eg - Ausid (Fujitsu) HD STB (component, no digital) has a fantastic quality picture that rivals any digital signal.
Some devices, which have both connectors, also dont necessarily give a better digital vs component picture - just different. The component seems to be a bit softer, but to me more natural, whilst the digital picture can be unnaturally sharp. Also, black levels may vary between the digital and analogue pictures.
Thus - you really need to try it and see. So do use BOTH cables
J.
Ideally you should run the output device to the display without using upconversion inbetween, as this risks degrading the signal. Whether you can actually see this is another story.
It comes down to convenience vs quality. I use a upconverting Yamaha amp because I like to be able to switch my inputs on the amp, rather than the display AND the amp (assuming you are using a dedicated HT system).
Any (minor) loss of quality is not a significant price to pay.
