Any H/T receiver will do. You do not need any special
amplifier You only need the Quad decoder *OR* the DTS discs
that are available in DTS 4.0 and any digital receiver or
most DVD players will decode them.

Total eclipse are conventional stereo cd's, not DTS or anything like
that. Isn't the quad info encoded from the original analogue source?

Alan is a full bottle on this and no doubt will give you the
*full* 1 hour classroom lecture ;-) (Sorry to Alan)
There are about 4 different version of Quadraphonic. The
easiest/more common one is SQ which behaves a bit like Dolby
pro-logic in that the rear channels are recorded out of
phase and you use a SQ de-coder to separate the channels and
voila 4 channel sound.
So all you need is your CD player> Quad decoder> preamp with
4 channel input> power amp to drive 4 speakers> 4 speakers.
Your Marantz receiver will be fine. All you need is a source
disc (or LP) a Quad decoder and hook it up between the pre.
ins/outs.
I hope that wasn't over simplified ;-)
Cheers TT

Hahahahaha :) I'll keep it brief, and just for the record I'm no expert on
the subject.
Quadraphonic is nothing new, even when it first appeared in commercial hi-fi
back in the early 70's.
There were a number of systems. Amongst the most predominant were -
CD-4 or discrete 4 channel. Also known as QuadraDisc.
In this system the front channels were normal analogue L and R modulations
in the record groove. The rear L and R channels were modulated with a 30kHz
carrier. A special CD-4 capable cartridge equipped with a Shibata or
similar profile stylus was required to track the high frequency modulations
of the rear channels which had frequencies as high as 45kHz. A CD-4
demodulator processed the front channels as normal RIAA equalisation, whilst
the rear channels had to be demodulated back down to audio to be heard. The
system wasn't fully compatible with existing 2 channel playback equipment
but did give the best separation.
SQ - a matrix system developed by CBS and Sony.
Like most matrix systems this relies on taking 4 discrete channels and
encoding them into 2 channels.
The SQ system encodes the 4 channels in the following way -
The L encoded or "total" channel is composed of the original L front channel
information unaltered to which reduced amounts of the two rear channels are
added with their phases altered.
The R "total" channel has the R front channel unaltered to which reduced
amounts of the rear channels are added with their phases shifted with
relation to the rear channel signals in the L "total" channel.
Mathematically they can be expressed as L(total) = L front - j0.707L back +
0.707 R back and,
R(total) = R front +j0.707R back - 0.707L back.
The advantage of the matrix systems is that unlike CD-4, a conventional
cartridge and stylus could be used to playback the records. An SQ decoder
separated out the 4 channels, but separation was never as good as the CD-4
system. However, unlike the CD-4 system, if a matrix record was played back
on a conventional 2 channel stereo system no information was lost.
Disadvantages were not as much separation between channels as the CD-4
system. However as the technology evolved, logic enhanced SQ decoders
improved in performance. Of the most sought after are the Tate 101 which
could reputedly resolve a 30dB separation between channels. On a more
practical note the later Sony models (eg. the SQD-2010) resolved as much
separation as -
Lf - Rf 35dB
Lb - Rb 13dB
Lf - Lb; Rf - Rb; Lf - Rb; Rf - Lb 17dB
QS or Regular Matrix (Sansui and some others)
Similar to the SQ system but not as sophisticated.
To playback quadraphonic records all one needs is a suitable decoder and a
multi-channel amplifier + 4 speakers.
I have stuck to the SQ and QS matrix systems for the following reasons -
Conventional cartridge and stylus.
Got a Sony SQD-2010 decoder which decodes SQ and QS records.
Integrates easily with my existing multi-channel system.
Matrix quad records can be directly transcribed to digital media which
preserves the encoding, so playback through the decoder gives just as good a
result as playback from the record.
There are lots of matrix quad records out there you can still purchase
second-hand and if you are lucky enough as new and sealed pressings.
Some SQ encoded CDs exist although you'll hardly ever see it noted on the
covers. Pink Floyd's Machine Head 25th Anniversary Edition has 2 tracks
which are SQ quad encoded (says so on the cover). Others include Santana's
live album Lotus. etc, etc.....

Alan

Just to confirm, the official release date announced by EMI for the
PULSE DVD is the 18th Sep 2006, (although Amazon.co.uk say 9th Oct
2006) but I won't believe it until I'm holding a copy in my hands.
Apparently the delay is due to technical issues, which I think is total
BS as EMI have been using this excuse all along. If the technical
issues are so bad that it requires so long to fix then how can they be
so sure they'll be fixed by Sep 18th, especially when it was supposed
to be ready for release in Dec 2005? Personally I think it's simply a
marketing ploy, as David Gilmour has a new CD being released on the 6th
March, followed by a UK/Europe/US tour and Roger Waters has a European
tour slated for June/July - so I'm sure EMI just want to keep the
marketing machine rolling for as long as possible and the release of
this DVD will be a nice bit of icing on the cake after the tours. I
wouldn't be surprised if it's released closer to christmas, just to get
the extra sales. They're sitting on a gold mine and they know it.
It was around Oct 2003 that David Gilmour announced the 5.1 mix of
Pulse had been completed. In April, June and October 2004 Nick Mason
assured us that it would be released by christmas 2004. By July 2005,
EMI says the DVD still needs more work ('technical issues'), but hopes
to have it out by late 2005. Then in Oct 2005 EMI announced Dec 5th
2005 as the release date, which was when the artwork was released and
many sites had it available to order. After Dec 5th came and went Jan
16th was a popular date being used by many sites and it wasn't until
then that EMI announced Sep 18th.
I only wish EMI would be more honest about what's really going on, the
longer they leave it the more people will be buying bootleg copies,
transferred from video tape, on sites like ebay.
There was mention of Wish You Were Here, Animals and The Wall being
remixed/remastered for SACD 5.1, but I'm not overly optimistic in light
of the Pulse DVD debacle - but who knows, it might just happen, I'll
certainly be very happy if it does.
I wouldn't even count on Delicate Sound of Thunder or The Wall Concert
being released on DVD, but I would love to be proven wrong

Thanks for that very informative post.
Forgive me for being a sceptic BUT I just wonder if the
release is being held back for copyright reasons. As you
said they are sitting on a goldmine. So how do you make
more gold? Make sure no one will steal it. Perhaps they
may even be waiting for Blu-Ray or HD-DVD.
What ever the reasons I bet anything that it has to do with
money and nothing else. Over the years how many badly
produced albums have we all seen? It never stopped the
bastards releasing them then and I am sure it wouldn't stop
them now.

Could be onto something there. How do you flog a new system like HD-DVD/Blue
ray in the face of entrenched SD-DVD usage and opposition to draconian
copyright hardware/software implementation? Nothing better than releasing a
list of titles with a guaranteed customer base, like PF.
On a sidenote, I've lost count of how many DVDs barely use half of the
allotted space (on a SD-DVD) for the film/audio track.
