C/Should blow a bit of wind up the V8 brigade.

I want to see SirLes getting it all crossed up and 4_wheel_sliding it
:-)

Love the opos. comments:

Reaction to Aurion:

Holden – Denny Mooney: “New products will lift the segment. We’ve
got the replacement for the Avalon – which is a good-looking car –
and I think as new, fresh metal gets out there, you’re going to see
people wanting to get back into those cars … The reality is, sure,
I’d like less competition ... (but) having the torque at the rear
wheels – it (Commodore) is a different-character car.”

Ford – Tom Gorman: “The decline in the large-car market is driven
by aged product. So while any competitor is a bad thing, products like
the BF Falcon, Mitsubishi 380 and Aurion will only boost the segment as
a whole … I fear every competitor. It will be a strong rival and will
put pressure on us, but at the same time it will create interest in the
market.”

Mitsubishi – Rob McEniry: “It’s another competitor we’ll have
to, along with our other fellow local manufacturers, compete with …
That’s certainly part of the Toyota tactic – to try and hold off
(380 fleet) sales, but it depends on the offer, I guess, and position
of the fleet – where they are in their buying cycle.”

sales.....[Not 380 its got no sales anyway]

Toyota is not entering the large car segment,

They are entering the obese Camry segment. The 380 is pproving that segment
to be dead. Toyota reckons they dont see front drive as a problem.

Welcome to Australia mate!!

But ... the AWD version would be a goer.

I can see why they cut the V6 camry, as this was coming in. So it's 4cyl
camry, and V6 Aurion.

It'l be interesting to see some reviews etc, but if it offers more power,
uses less fuel and handles better (well, hey, that's not hard, the current
Holden in standard guise handles like a bucket of shit. I was amazed at just
how woefull it was.) they might be on a goer. Bung in a govt contract for
fleet sales, a competitive Taxi package and it could be quite viable.

Honestly, all this rear wheel drive stuff is a load of bullshit as for most
people, 95% of the time they're just cruising around in it and not pushing
the car at all anyway. The current Commodore is testament to that. You can't
push the car anyway! I think it'l be good to get some decent competition in
the market.

Spot on!

Most cars nowadays are FWD and most fuel efficient AWDs are FWD biased or
only engage RWD when needed. So either FWD or AWD for us, don't give a shit
about RWD.

Yeah - they 'might' build an AWD.
And it 'can' be assembled alongside the cooking model.

Bullshit from Toyota is the same as bullshit from anywhere else.
Looks tastes and smells the same.

Translation:
If those fucks at Toyota are turning a profit on this new dog and
managing to take any sales away from the opposition in the process,
that'll be well enough for them and there'll be no AWD offered.
Unless Nissan bites the bullet and pulls their new Skyline into here
with AWD,
If the Toyota thing bombs in the market, (they can't bribe fleet
buyers with more than the others offer) then there will certainly a
limited run first an 'image' model (the SC one is already developed,
and it sounds like Toyota is shit-scared of 380 price cutting), and if
that doesn't appreciably assist, extremely unlikely as it seems an AWD
version may miraculously appear.

There's some history in all this.
Toyota has had AWD versions of most of it's large sedans since the
seventies, and probably earlier with the crown.
And these were NEVER sold here.
Not one.

Don't see that changing any time soon.

Solely because it's cheaper to build. NOT because it's better.

I'm certain that they would import AWD models if they thought they could
sell them at a profit after factoring in the huge compliancing costs,
fact is they don't import their huge range of cars simply because they
won't sell in sufficient numbers to be profitable.
IMO the problem is our car market is too small to make a profit from low
volume models.
Gov co could change this overnight if they wanted by dropping the need
for imported cars to comply with ADR's but I can't imagine that
happening any time soon as its a back door way of protecting local
manufacturing.
Toyota didn't become the most profitable car company by selling cars at
a loss.
