Would car production cease, like it did during WWII? Would the army take
over Holden & Ford vehicle factories to produce military vehicles? I can't
imagine something like that ever happening, but then again but they probably
said the same thing back in 1939!

They wouldn't need to take them over, they could just pay Holden and Ford to
produce them for the Army instead. GMH produced boilers for warships during
WW2, for example.

I don't think it would be necessary these days.
Anyway, with you being a Jew and all, I'd be more worried about saving your
arse from the gas chamber :)

I'd be worried if I were you too. They also gassed homosexuals.

They would not need too... bombodores are already in the assembly line.
Thinking about it the first thing that would be needed in war time is
the "Howard Transport vehicle".
A modified 2 door VT with a 10 litre all australian made V8 and high
geared box to get it up to speed along with a new leather interior, what
would happen is, all petrol stations would be taken over by Gov co
considering the fuel shortage Howard deems is now evident, then again,he
would, more than likey be eligable for the Fuel Grants scheme with
ammendment that any goverment vehicle slightly under 2 ton can qualify
under the Road transport fuel grants subsection,he would possibly also
qualify under the wartime luxury car subsection of the fuel grants
scheme.
Possibly could not cliam back the GST on the fuel used, but could claim
it as a deduction by the cent per litre method as it would be greatest
over vehicle value and kilometers traveled.

I think that production of cars would certainly cease in a *world* war. But
for different reasons than in WW2.
To paraphrase Albert Einstein when he lamented how his technology was used
to make atomic bombs: "I do not know how WW3 will be fought, but I do know
that WW4 will be fought with sticks and stones"
Sobering thought: (1) WW3 = near total destruction, back to the stone age.
(2) even with the miniscule amount of people left there will still be a WW4
as we will always fight, and not learn from our mistakes.
BTW, I'm not a Greenie loony left anti war treehugger etc, I believe most of
the military incursion into the Middle East etc by the Western nations
today. But NBC stuff is scary

The army could just buy all the Holden Adventras that are rusting away
in the holding yard at Elizabeth. They drive and sound like trucks,
seems perfect to me.

Not to mention aeroplane engines and anti-aircraft guns, among other things.
But a major problem would be to start production in Australia of the
components that are currently imported (the same as in WW2! - but different
items). Most of the manufacturing businesses that started up to do import
replacement in WW2 have now ceased.

are handy for spreading out the maps when planing tactical battlefield

I think you'd find that the both vehicle production lines and the military
equipment are for too specialised down seperate paths. If things were that
desperate I suppose you could refit them to suite, but as someone said,
WW3 will be point and click....

Lots of reasons.
And it's standard procedure.
The posh ones get used to transport the officers, I guess - and the
more normal stuff for the troops.
You don't really believe that the Land Rover crap they have now will
keep running reliably if it's actually used for it's intended purpose?
ITYF that the shitheads running the defence department look upon the
publics possession as their own in circumstances of war - even if the
matter isn't approved of by the real owners of the stuff, or even if
there's not even any parliamentary debate about the war thing.
BTW, that's a situation we are actually in at the moment.
Oh, and then there's the national transport fleet.
Also factored into logistics calculations.
And the licenced guns.
They'll be stolen by GovCo too.
And we haven't even started in on compulsion (AKA conscription)
That's the one where GovCo steals actual lives of those it's meant to
serve after deciding a war is a good idea without consulting those
it's meant to serve.
That is back on the agenda (as we always knew it would be) being
obscured for the moment by the backyard abortion and Bali 9 'debate'.
Trust me, there are NO limits to the bastardary GovCo is capable of.

Woah. Did Holden build RR Merlin engines for the GAF Mustang? I think GAF
was across the road from Holden's Fishermen's Bend plant.

When he said that he assumed it would be fought against the Soviet Union
with nukes. This is not a valid assumption today.

If it's starts with war against Indonesia the ADF would be thinking: "Thank
fuck the Darwin railway finally got built!"

According to my Warrant Officer brother who until recently managed a
large transport fleet in Townsville the current Army Landrovers are very
reliable and are very good for their intended purpose, don't forget they
are powered by an Isuzu diesel.
