Ok, bike was stolen a few months ago off our front porch along with a school
bag. We found the bag, although all the contents were dumped all over the
place.
I reported bike to Police as stolen make, model, but didn't have Ser #.
Yesterday I see a teen on the exact same make, model down the street going
into the supermarket...
A cop just happened to be walking in, and I asked him where the Ser# are on
the bikes so I can see if the store I bought it from keeps those things. He
told me, and in the meantime the kid that rode in on it just walked on past
and down the parking lot...I ddin't even see him as I was talking to the
officer, but my kids saw him....
Anyway, I went and confronted the guy (carrying a bag of alcohol, and
obviously stoned off his face)... I said "you know that bike you rode to
Coles on?" He mumbled "yeah" and then upon further questioning he denied
riding in!! Friggin stoners...
So I went and picked up the bike and drove to the police station and told
them what had happened (my kid & friend actually knew the guy's name.) The
officer then proceded to tell me that if I'm not 100% sure it is my bike,
"I" could be up for theft! She went on to basically making me out to be a
criminal and then said if he turns out to have proof of purchase for the
same type of bike, then I could be blah blah blah... So I said, well I know
for a fact I have a P.O.P. and if he doesn't then what? "We'll have to deal
with it then"...
I showed my son and there were some scrapes that I and he both definitely
remember, and could see the badge on front was obviously pried off, and much
less scratching where he had stickers on the frame. It's his bike...just a
little more banged up, and the front brakes removed and an el-cheapo brake
handle a different color to the bike added!! That damn thing cost me $650 on
sale, so I made sure it had all good gear on it! And I'm not sure a 17yo
stoner would be able to purchase such a bike without a job, etc and then
"Accidentally" leave it behind? For god's sake...
It just really pissed me off that officer turned it around on me, and I mean
REALLY pisses me off... no wonder more people take things into their own
hands...
I suppose that guy might be able to sue me because he crashed on my bike
after he stole it and might have permanent physical and mental injuries from
it too right? F*#k!!
Sorry for the rant...

Don't be.
Get that serial number and POP information, and front the mongrel pig
that did the routine on you and make it do some actual work.
Yup - PIG.
Almost every time a common or garden citizen fronts the Pigs on
matters like yours they land the
'everyone but a Pig is a criminal '
treatment.
The easy to remember fun bit?
The Pig is infinitely more likely to be a criminal than you are.

Update: Ser# from bike shop matches this bike. It IS my son's bike... duh

Yeah, i just went down and told the Police that it is definitely my son's
bike.... Gave her a name of the guy that was riding it, a description, etc,
and she tells me I have gone about it the wrong way, and that I'm not
allowed to "steal back my own property." He left it there for fark's sake!!
She said now that she'll have to speak to her Sgt to see if they can go any
further with it... my god this whole thing is farked up...
I've never had a complaint on police as "they're doing their job." But
first cop at the shops wasn't interested in helping me... I did what needed
to be done myself, then 2nd cop tries to turn me into "the criminal" and the
3rd cop says similar and i've done it the wrong way, etc etc etc... The 3rd
one's funniest comment was "maybe it wasn't even him that stole it."

unfortunately occasionally people have made mistakes.
I'd say however that the fact the bonghead prick denied it was his, or
that he was riding it, is a damn good sign it's stolen. And furthermore,
if that's his caper, he's probably _very_ keen not to have any extra
attention or police looking around his place. In other words the chances
he will push the idea is absurdly low.
I would have gone a step further and followed the bastard home
personally, so that if anything happens (any arsehole who steals has no
morals, so it's right up their alley) like a smashed window, you can go
to their place and kick the shit out of them.
Harsh? yep. appropriate? yep. almost nil chance of you being 'wrong' on
the origin of the bike? yep.
One of the things I would do if in your shoes is stuff like engraving
initials on the stem (the bit the handlebars attach to that goes into to
forks in the front frame 'tube' ) at a point lower than is normally
visible. Then you can undo the bolt(s) lift it out and show the
engraving. Takes 10 minutes to do in the first place, and whilst a thief
might grind a number or have a uv light to check for markings (though
most don't as thieves aren't exactly intelligent) it's unlikely they'd
ever check something like that.

don't be, I hope the cunt lives in misery for all this days (yes, over a
bicycle). If he fessed up and did something to make amens (say mowing
your lawn for the next 2 years) I'd be willing not to want to cut of
their hands :)

good show! If no charges are pressed etc, feel free to anonymously post
the culprits address, maybe somebody will live close enough to go round
and kindly thump him whilst you are at a public place with lots of
witnesses! :)

that's crud. You could easily argue the case that had you not done so,
he could have left and done away with it. Considering the police hadn't
found the fucking thing (you _did_ report it stolen in the first place
right? believe it or not they tend to locate a few bikes, at least in my
local area, going on what they told me when mine was half inched years
back)

Wouldn't hurt to talk to a local radio station.

so he's 'just' a receiver of stolen goods! :)
I dunno what to say. I've met some terrific coppers over the years,
unfortunately the few bad ones are really shit, and it would seem the
force tends to turn them up for what they are, and as a side effect
those few never manage decent progression up the chain of command, so
the public gets to see em more!

Guilty as charged. At that point you should have belted the living fuck out
of him and left him with a face full of broken teeth.
He'll *never* forget why he shouldn't steal or hang around those who steal
again.

If the wife, daughter & her friend, and my 1-year old weren't in the vehicle
nearby watching, it would have happened, that's for sure...

I wish these people would just "go missing"...they're such a waste of life
to take a 10yo's bike for school, along with his schoolbag...
One more thing when I told the cop originally that the guy was completely
stoned was her comment of "everyone in XXXXX is stoned." My wife later on
said I should have said "well, I'm not stoned, you're not stoned, so what
about us that are NOT stoned?"
I also like the "receiver of stolen goods point"... wish I had thought of
it...
