I recently purchased a DVD recorder. It works great when I record
television programs. When I try to record to a DVD from a DVD on my
DVD player, it shows up in black and white. 2 different DVD's....Is
this some sort of copywrite protection? Any cures for this problem?
Thanks in advance

yes it's copyright!
one solution is to buy the cheapest nastiest Chinese DVD player as the
master player, as they often don't care for macrovision etc. JB hifi used to
be helpful in that area.

except I don't believe DVD recorders will copy DVDs in 5.1 - only stereo
PC based systems are the way to go

Guys you are all wrong!!
Macrovision makes copying a dvd to vhs videotape look like
garbage...giving you a picture that goes dark then light at regular
intervals.
Copy protection or copyguard protection
from a dvd to dvd recorder
or from a video stores vhs tape to a dvd recorder
actually stops the dvd recorder from going into record mode.
the black and white problem described here sounds more like an NTSC
picture into a pal recording problem.

Try a site called VCDhelp and/or google your DVD model and or brand and
hack. It is possible; as someone has mentioned the problem may be the
original disc is in NTSC... some standalone DVD recorders will play both
NTSC and PAL but only record in PAL. So if the signal on the original is
NTSC and you try and record in PAL it will probably come out in black or
white.
Some cheap brands like LG and Samsung have easy hacks using the remote
control to overcome macrovision all you need to do is google the model with
the word hack.
