You'll recall my wife put her car in a dam.
Well, we're still waiting for the insurance cheque! Wife's just called them,
and they said they sent the cheque out last week! They asked her to confirm
our address, and they said they'd sent it to an address that we haven't been
at for almost 5 years!! Stupid thing is, the same company sent us a cheque
less than 6 months ago, when our car was totalled in a car park by a wayward
car, and they sent it to our current address!!
Absolute dickheads!
Now they say if we fax them a bank statement, they'll deposit it straight
into our account. Stupid twats!

You've written off two cars in 6 months, and you're calling them stupid?

Faxed them a bank statement yet???
I'd have told them to go fuck themselves (use whatever pollite version
of that you can) and offer a Stat Dec duly signed and witnessed that
you have not received any cheque from them.
Else, a statement from your bank saying that there is no evidence of a
cheque being cashed from the Insurance Shysters.
Of course, FIRST they'd need to provide evidence that the cheque they
sent you has in fact been cashed. Why not ask them? - they have
absolutely no right to view your banking transactions whatsoever in
any circumstances in the absence of a court order.

Chances are that 'they' is the office droid who pulled the clanger, or
a close acquaintance, trying very hard to cover their own arse.
Ask to speak to the manager... who'll be unavailable of course -- in
which case ask for the manager's name. Any correspondence should be
addressed 'private and confidential' (otherwise the secretary will
intercept it).
I'd be very surprised if she who last tried it on with me still works
for the organisation concerned (which happens to be Telstra). Cheeky
bitch even rang the bank for the information I refused... which the
bank then dutifully provided. I no longer deal with that bank either
(which happens to be the Commonwealth). :)

The bank statement was so they could get the bank details to deposit the
money in. They needed proof it was our account they were going to pay into.

Wife rang to confirm they had all the details today and was given bullshit
info about how long it would take for them to cancel the cheque, and then
put it into our account. She demanded to speak to a manager, and was told
one would call her back. 15 minutes later, she still hadn't had a call, so
called them back and was put through to a manager who eventually apologised,
and arranged for the money to be put in tomorrow.

heh. I had a dormant account with them (had about $10 in it). They
kept sending me statements every month, complete with a monthly
account keeping fee ($2). When it got to $10 overdrawn, I rang them.
The droid reckoned I "had" to pay, so I told the droid that as far as
I was concerned, they'd supplied me credit without my knowledge or
consent and they weren't getting squat. Once *that* came out, they
were happy to close the account without me paying anything and the
droid didn't even need to call it's supervisor - so it obviously
*knew* the business about paying was crap, but still tried it on
anyway. Needless to say, I don't deal with them any more.

They still got your original ten bucks though... fait accomplis!
I actively seek out banks (and others) that don't charge monthly
account keeping fees, with a fair degree of success... though some,
such as NAB, do require a sizeable credit balance in a linked account,
albeit at competitive interest rates. Catch is they don't have a
local branch where I am but are currently fine for internet banking
(10¢ per transaction).
On the local scene, where I need to be able to make deposits, I've
closed at least four accounts in the last twelve months or so (soon as
the bastards introduce account keeping fees or other tricky devices).
Particularly tricky was Bendigo Bank's authentication key (where you
pay them to stop someone else from robbing your account).
I'm now down to the last financial institution in town, which happens
to be a building society that doesn't pay decent interest rates on
working accounts -- which is where a linked account with Dragon Direct
comes in handy.
Loyalty is something most banks no longer understand -- you've just
gotta be prepared to shaft them before they do it to you (a lesson I
learnt from the Commonwealth some years ago). :))

I had an account with a building society that was unused for a few
years. When I went in to close it, their computer printed about 2
pages of account-keeping fees leaving me with just a few cents to
withdraw.
I asked them when they advised me of the new charges. They said that
it had been advertised in the newspapers. I pointed out that that
was insufficient as it was unreasonable to expect everybody to buy a
newspaper every day and to scour it for a public notice from a
financial institution.
The branch people probably thought that I was being unreasonable and
couldn't do anything about it. So I wrote to their head office and
got a cheque to cover all the fees that'd been deducted.
