Hi all,

We have 4 cars at the moment but only need two. My wife will be getting
a new car in June or July assuming VW don't delay the delivery of her
Golf GTI any further. Right now she has a 2005 Golf with nearly 40k kms
on it and it will likely get to 55k kms by the time the new car arrives.

We also have the car that I just bought a replacement for - a 2001
Holden Astra SRi with 179,000 kms on the clock.

I'm having trouble working out which one we should sell now in an effort
to reduce the amount of money we lose through depreciation.

The issue with the Astra is that it may need maintenance, particularly
working on the steering rack which is apparently quite worn and getting
loose. Stuff like that will cost money, and inconvenience.

15k kms added to 180k probably won't reduce the value of that car much,
but 50% more kays on the current Golf may result in a bigger $$$ amount
of depreciation. If that is a correct assumption we will sell the Golf.

What would you guys do?

Sounds like a fair assumption to me, the newer car will depreciate quicker
but I'd sell whichever car you like least :-)

Geeze, you guys do a _lot_ of driving?!?

Prolly sell the Golf. If reliability issues are going to be a show stopper,
then I see what you mean about the ageing Astra. However if you have four
cars ATM, then you already have a spare, so could offload both now?

Or you are including the ordered new car in that?

Sell the old car. There is a reason that any businees worth its salt
replaces their cars ever couple of years. Old cars are not worth keeping.

Get rid of the oldest car.
Why didn't you trade it in on the Renault?

The Astra would have about 110k kms on it now if I had been driving it
because the commute totals 92kms/day. My wife drove it for her work for
3 years though and put the first 120k kms on it.

I just can't count. We have three cars now, and a new one coming in
June, hopefully.

Trade-in is the best way to throw away a few grand.

What do you think you are doing now with your money (car) sitting around
doing nothing?
If it takes you 6 mths to sell you could lose more than a "few grand"
plus lose the time and money getting roadworthies, ads and screwing
around with tyre kickers.

I'll let you know how it goes. I sold my old $4000 Pulsar in only a few
weeks.

I expect selling a VW Golf will be a different experience to selling
something that would surely attract more tyre kickers, such as a Commodore.

I would expect the market for a Golf to be a lot smaller than for more
common cars and being relatively new with high klms won't help.
How much are you asking?
