I have read on numerous sights that you will not get the most out of the xbox 360 unless you have a high definition tv. Now i don't have one of those but i was wondering if you have a high definition set top box would you be able to plug your xbox 360 into it and get high definition pictures?

I have know idea whether that is possible or not but it seems like a cheaper option than going out and buying a new hd tv plus the $650 xbox 360.

I suppose my only other option for hd pictures is to plug the xbox 360 into my tiny ass 17" pc monitor

What do you reckon?

Has anyone seen what the xbox360 looks like without high definition? I presume it would look like when i plug my pc into the tv kinda better than ps2/xbox but kind of shite compared to the pc monitor

Analog TV owners needn't fret. 480i will continue to be a supported output resolution; it would be suicide not to have it. But even when playing on a 4:3 display, games will run in widescreen by default, though gamers will have the option to switch to 4:3 should they so choose. Designers are very much encouraged to design their games so that they're playable in a 4:3 ratio, with dialog text, HUDs and those sorts of things appearing properly at 4:3.
As that says, it would be suicide to "require" HD TVs. They aren't exactly mainstream yet. The games will look fine on a standard TV, you just won't be able to bump them up to the next level by choosing the 720 option.

Have a read through http://www.xbox.com/en-US/hardware/xbox360/highdefdetails.htm

I understand that you don't need a high definition tv, but i have read reports that without one the picture doesn't look that much better than xbox. I would presume that all the xbox 360s i have seen at eb, jb hi fi, harvey norman would have been running on hd tvs, i am just a little wary of going out an buying an xbox360 right now, if i don't have tv to run it the way it is supposed to be

Well according to gamespot (link above)the graphics look like crap to me in normal resolution....I reckon my best bet may be to buy a cheap second hand 21 inch pc monitor..

Graphics are as good as or better than current Xbox on your monitor now, sure they look great on a high res monitor, I certainly wouldn't call them crap on an SD monitor though.

$650 is a lot of money for games that play with graphics a little better than a normal $250 xbox...I actually thought some of the games looked better on a normal xbox (at the gamespot link) I think that like plugging your pc into a tv it has a very hard time showing blacks and lines aren't smooth...

I have been playing the 360 in HD and it is far superior. The graphics in Ghost Recon and Fight Night in particular are outstanding.

If you play fight night round 3 on an SD TV using xbox ver and xbox 360 ver the 360 will look better. The reason is of the HD output gets downconverted to SD so you start with better quality images, also the graphics card in the xbox 360 is newer and better than that in the xbox.

I think its still worth you getting the 360 as you will also start to see games released on 360 that are not available on normal xbox

I played on a SD 40" TV and on a 17" Monitor today. Didn't notice a world of difference. Still looked great on the 40" TV. Mind you it wasn't some shitty KMart TV, so I hope your normal SD TV is still half decent.
