We've all heard about how Asians are such great savers, unlike we here
in the decadent west who put everything on the plastic and finance our
lifestyles by remortgaging our houses, supposedly in Asia everyone
saves a huge portion of their income...

For those who believe in stereotypes, this article may come as a
surprise:

Australia's Financial Literacy Program has become an exporter with
Korea eyeing the program to help curb out-of-control Korean credit card
debts.

Personal bankruptcy and overuse of credit cards has long been a social
problem in Korea. But educators in Korea are keen to finally try to do
something about it.

The long term desire for security is often offset
by a short term appetite for risk.

Or put another way, Asians are savers but also gamblers.

But perhaps "national temperament" is nonsense anyway.
