Hello all,
I am a very infrequent poster here for a number
of years but an AVID reader.
Is there anyway with Mozilla that I can block
out anything that is cross-posted to a heap of
newsgroups. for example.. aus.politics, aus.general, aus.electronics,
aus.legal, aus.theatre, aus.rail, aus.tv, soc.culture.australian
I only want to read the stuff pertinent to specifically this NG and not
follow the life and times of Le Turd or his idiot buddies.
Please Please
Floot

Why dont you use a real news reader like Mozilla Thunderbird?
(also great for email). You are only actually downloading 'headers' with
the topic and poster, so if you don't want to read the post, don't click
on it.

That's what Floot is using - if you check out the headers, you'll see it.

I do use Mozilla Thunderbird, maybe I should try another mail reader,
any suggestions?

MS Outlook, eh? So how do I filter out messages that have been crossposted?

Try looking in Tools->Message Filters. Click on New and follow your
nose. This way you can at least get rid of JPT and the others.
Crossposting is doable but I don't think is can be done from within
thunderbird but don't quote me on this.
Lionel.

I installed POPfilter for Windows today (which I am using with xnews).
It is open-source i.e. free and it can filter mail and NNTP (i.e. usenet
newsgroups). I am only using the NNTP part of it.
So far it seems pretty good (it is Bayesian so it needs a bit of training
but it seems to work ok after 1 hr or so of training). Training consists
of downloading a heap of posts and checking they get categorized properly
(and fixing the category for 20 posts at a time via a web page when
necessary).
It now filters 100% of that lunatic French bloke and about 98% of follow
ups to him, which is overall about 97% of the crap in aus.invest. Very few
false positives.
To save someone else some effort:
Using POPfile with xnews, you must enable "allow concurrent NNTP
connections" - otherwise the POPfile UI (accessed via a web page) hangs
until you exit xnews.
I also found I had to enter a random userid and password (in xnews) to get
it to work on Bigpond (other news servers may be different). The userid I
entered in xnews is
"news-server.bigpond.net.au:119:aa" - password random.
http://popfile.sourceforge.net/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?POPFileDocumentationProject
It is written in Perl but the Windows version installs like a bought one
(don't need to install Perl), and you can use the non-Windows perl version
for other OS's.

My post above got classed as spam, presumably because I mentioned the F
word and the L word.

Sounds interesting, thanks for the info. I haven't used xnews before,
maybe it will be worth looking into. Although I believe there are some
pretty advanced features in knode, thought most likely somewhat more
difficult to use . . .

You can use POPfilter with whatever newsreader you are using now.
Another one someone pointed me to is "newsproxy" (formerly known as
"nfilter") but that is a bit harder to come by (currently the binary is
posted in bigpond.broadband.tech.win) - bit dubious of that distribution
method (only one step up from a binary attached to an unsolicited email).
