Saw this in the Sunday sports section of the Melbourne Age:

Reader Feedback of the Week
"The Robert Allenby advert for Dodo internet company needs to be sent to
the rules committee. It's a par five, Allenby hits the ball, Dodo lifts
out the flag, the ball trickles in and Dodo declares it a hole in one.
Where I play, having a flag tended while off the green incurs a stroke
penalty in stroke games and loss of hole in matchplay. Hole in one my
arse, he should be disqualified. Allan Gatiss, St Kilda"

Sorry Allan, read 17-1 again ... please. ;-)

I've been to the beach at St Kilda. Nice views. And I'm not referring to
the Hebridean island, either ;-)

I doubt the 'nice views' were of the beach either....a focus point for
Melbourne low life and weirdos....what were you doing there Kev?

Actually, if you read it again, it seems that the flag was moved after
the ball was hit. When I read rule 17-1 it seemed to suggest the flag
should be removed *before* the ball is hit. Or does it just need to be
attended before the ball is hit and so can be moved after the strike?

Rule 17-1 doesn't require the flag be removed before the stroke. It
actually says "....attended, removed or held up".

So, if someone is standing near the flagstick when the ball is struck,
he is attending (see note 1) and thus entitled to remove it.

If the flag is lifted after the ball is struck (and the person at the flag
was not attending it) then a penalty is in order.

Anyone sending a fellow competitor forward to attend a flag on a Par 5 is
likely to be guilty of unduw delay!
