Aussies start the year with eight in the world top 50. I think that's
the best result ever!
8 Adam Scott
21 Stuart Appleby
24 Nick O'Hern
36 Robert Allenby
39 Mark Hensby
44 Peter Lonard
47 Rod Pampling
49 Geoff Ogilvy

I really like Stuart Appleby's game. I'm surprised he isn't higher than
21. He hits the ball fairly straight considering his distance off the tee.
Maybe he'll get a couple of wins this year in addition to his yearly
Mercedes victory.

Both of the "bee's" are on the way back, especially Allenby.
His performance down here before Christmas was outstanding, winning all
three Australian events (Open, PGA, Masters). He was ranked around the
mid-70s before that.
From memory Appleby was close to top 10 a year ago. But if you are only
going to win one event at the start of every year, you're going to drop
as the year goes on. ;-)

Wish I'd had a good start to the year... Managed to get two rounds at
Sandringham, 85 (personal best) and 88. Joined a club and first competition
game (first game to get handicap) on Saturday and scored an embarrassing
110.
Back to the driving range tomorrow, me thinks.

Exactly the same thing happened to me. My last round at Sandy was my
best with an 85, then I joined a club and almost 10 months later I've
finally carded my first sub-90 round (a Stableford 42, off 22 with a
CCR of 71). I believe the ACR of Sandringham is 68 and the ACR of my
club is 72, and honestly I think the gap between the courses is a lot
more than that.
BTW: I have yet to enter a stroke competition at my club. They just
aren't run on the days I play, so every single "gross" score I have is
actually extrapolated from Par and Stableford comps. The extrapolation
becomes reality only on rounds where you don't record a single out.
This is one of many things I didn't expect prior to joining a club. I
had zero exposure to Victorian club golf prior to signing up, and I
_thought_ I was reasonably well educated on what to expect when I
slapped down my deposit. Having said that I'm happy to pick up the
ball, along with everyone else, if it means I can get off the course
in 4 hours 10 mins.
Oh, and another thing that was water off a ducks back before I joined
the club were CCR, ACR, Stableford, Par, 4BBB, etc etc. :-) And don't
get me started on the umpteen different ways wagering occurs in these
comps...

Played today and knocked 10 shots off from last week's horror.
The guys in the comp were playing stableford (I think) so I guess I'll learn
how it works soon enough.
