Hunter, McKay quit Carlton board
October 20, 2005

DAVID McKay and Ken Hunter played a combined total of more than 400
matches for Carlton and shared seven premierships, but two nights ago
the pair announced that in an official sense they could do no more for
their football club.

The two unlikely — and voluntary — casualties of the Blues' astounding
and ongoing fall from grace quit as Carlton directors at the end of
Tuesday night's board meeting, saying it was time for the club to
search elsewhere for new blood and potential leaders.

Which is, of course, what the current crisis at the football club
comes down to — leadership.

Carlton will soon announce an annual financial loss of close to $1
million for 2005 and took ownership of only its second wooden spoon.

Changes and possibly a restructure were mooted for the football
department with no one but the senior coach — who signed a three-year
deal in March extending his tenure until 2008 — declared safe. But
Denis Pagan pleaded for his assistants and all appear to have
survived, as has the popular and promising football manager Grant
Williams. The board has approved the appointment of two new part-time
assistant coaches — one of whom will specialise in ruck work — or one
full-time assistant who can cover both bases.

Most of his fellow directors understand that Ian Collins will remain
at the helm of the club in the short-term but that he, too, is looking
for a successor, one he does not believe currently sits alongside him
at the board table. Collins believed that leader should have been Mike
Fitzpatrick, but the premiership captain now seems headed for bigger
chairmanships.

Collins must be exhausted. Having had a heart attack, two lots of
surgery and then being further debilitated by a broken leg, he has
also had to deal with his position as CEO at Telstra Dome and
unexpected setbacks at Carlton such as the million-dollar social club
tax bill and the refusal of the Kangaroos to share facilities with the
Blues so they can start a badly needed upgrade at Princes Park.

Surely, had he been operating at full steam, the Brendan Fevola
contract would have been handled differently — and better — and
Matthew Lappin would not still be languishing in the contractual
wilderness.

Scott Camporeale is gone from the Blues, but Lappin genuinely appears
to want to stay and, symbolically, his departure would be another
blow.

Hunter, who also served under John Elliott but resigned soon before
Elliott was thrown out, was seconded to Carlton's marketing department
for six months this year and, according to some fellow directors, was
largely responsible for saving the Optus Oval farewell from proving an
embarrassment. He reportedly told Collins just before Tuesday's
meeting that he would not be seeking re-election. The announcement led
to McKay, a close friend of Hunter's, following suit.

Hunter told The Age: "The club's performance this year was
unacceptable and some changes had to be made and people had to go to
make way for new blood. I felt it was time for me to be one of those
people."

The departure of McKay and Hunter will pave the way for developer
Daniel Grollo and National Australia Bank CEO Ahmed Fahour to bring
some relatively young blood to the board table. Both are regarded as
presidential material but Collins must now convince them to come
aboard.

Rah, rah....yeah, yeah. Fuck off! No football news about at the moment, it's
all pretty much horse racing in Melbourne at the moment except for a little
bit about Melbourne Victory every now and then, so what'll we do? I know,
let's write a sensationalist article about a non-event!!! Can't pass up any
opportunity to stick the boot into Carlton, can we now?!

Hunter and McKay have not "quit" the board...they have decided not to seek
re-election. From the horses' mouths: David McKay said, "My original
intention of joining the Carlton Football Club Board was to have an input
into rebuilding the Club. Given the circumstances that the incoming Board
found itself in when elected in November 2002, I was only ever going to be
involved in a transitional role and I feel comfortable now with my
contribution to the Club."

Ken Hunter who has spent a total of 13 years as a Board member of the
Carlton Football Club is of a similar view. "When I became a part of the
Carlton One group in 2002 I didn't have a long term view of being on the
Board of the Carlton Football Club. I wanted to be involved in working with
the new Board to assist in rebuilding the Club. David and I believe now is a
good time to reinvigorate the Board with some new faces," Ken said

Both David and Ken have indicated that they will not seek re-election. "I
would like to make it clear that David and I have not resigned from the
Board, we have at this stage, only indicated that we will not stand for
re-election. We believe that there are some very good people around the
Carlton Football Club who are more than suitable for a role on the Board to
take our Club forward," Ken added.

A real supporter of any club supports their club.
No Carlton supporter is happy with the position at the moment, but there's
nothing to be gained by white anting the people entrusted with improving
that position.
Anyone with a reasonable grip on reality knew it would be a long road back.
The "supporter" in question has never done anything but slag the club he
claims to support, and his constructive suggestions centre around dumping
the entire administration, coaching staff and playing personnel.
You obviously get some satisfaction both from Carlton's predicament and the
idea of widespread dissatisfaction among supporters but I can assure you the
vast majority of Carlton members, as distinct from posing trolls on usenet,
are in for the long haul and 100% behind the club.

As I've said many times before Colin, you have more than enough to worry
about at Windy Hill.
At least at Carlton we know we're in the shit.
What were you saying before about the blind faithful?
A fair few of them hanging around Napier Street I'd say.
Maybe things will improve over there when Sheeds finally goes to the
twighlight home.
At a time of his choosing of course.

Less than at Optout Oval.

As I have said before Essendon will make the finals, and I look
forward to Jezza being a member at EFC.

Hmm.

An ideas coach.

Has more ideas each year than Denis has had period.

>At a time of his choosing of course.

Happy to see him there for a few years yet.

He at least knows how to build a list and deal with the changes in
dynasties, having done it several times.
