... would everyone be ready for the return of Bruce McAvaney?
'fess up, everyone.. you loved to loathe and hate him.. But
should Seven/Ten win, what are the odds that he and the old Sandy
Roberts/Ian Robertson crew make the return to footy commentating?

Anyone who was subjected to Brian Taylor last Friday night should have
no problem with change...

It's the price we'd have to pay to get Eddie McGuire out of the picture. A
pyrrhic victory it would be. At least Wayne Carey isn't playing any more,
but Bruce would still find someone to have orgasms over.

Practical experience? How many games do you need to play to qualify for the
job of recognising a player and saying his name?

Channel 9 are a successful business. They didn't get that way because they
don't know their audience. The fact is, for all our whinging, the kind of
footy fan who posts to this newsgroup is not typical. The typical fan loves
the style of Eddy as evidenced by the success of the Thursday night footy
show.
If channel 7 do win the rights, then they will try as hard as they can to be
like Eddy, because Channel 7 is also a business, and, just like all those
top-rating FM rock stations that claim to be different but always sound
exactly the same - 7 has no choice but to imitate the market leader.
The business of television is just like any other busness, the vendor is the
person who receives the money and provides the product, the customer is the
person who hands over the money and receives the product. In television,
the vendor is the TV station, the customer is the advertiser, and YOU are
the product. That's why your opinion doesn't matter to them.
That's also why we cannot possibly hope for any improvement in the situation
until we become the customer - so bring on exclusive Pat TV rights to AFL.

Cometti is an odd one.. What I mean by that, is that did anyone
notice how quickly he accepted the offer to go commentate for Nine
after Seven lost the rights? I get the feeling that if Seven wins them
back, he'd do the same again. If so, he's rather eager to jump ship...

Most of them would do the same...other than Eddie and maybe Gary Lyon, I
don't think any of them have a particular loyalty to any of the stations.
Personally, I hope Seven/Ten win it back, and promise to offer better
coverage to the North-East states and Gary stays where he is. I don't see
how Nine can go it alone as a free to air broadcaster of AFL given their
commitments to the coverage of rugby league.
I wonder...could Nine just bid for part of the rights, say Friday night and
Sunday arvo including finals and let the rest sort itself out with 7 and 10
fighting it out for the rest of the rights among themselves?

You would think so! At least with gridiron in the US, the
rights are basically shared amongst 4 networks: ABC, CBS, NBC, and Fox.
Monday night Football on ABC has been a staple for a good 30something
years, while the rest have the bulk of the games over the weekend. That
way, it's win-win for everyone. With all the footy matches going on
over a given round, no doubt a lot of them are NOT getting aired.
sharing this around, whether the match is ho-hum or a blockbuster,
insures telly coverage for every side in the league.
