Carlton are supposedly going to take Dylan McClaren as their first pick. Is
he worth it? The fact is he had quite a few chances to establish himself at
the Lions with the regular injuries to Keating and suspensions Charman, and
the 2 year knee-injury of Beau McDonald. But he never quite made it.

Sure, he tries hard enough, and he's a likeable young bloke of "good
character", not like the Angwins of this world. But the fact is, at 196cm,
he's just not quite big enough to cut it as the number 1 ruck. Maybe he's
got some potential as a big man in defence, I don't know. He's showed that
he can kick a goal when he's given the chance.

I've met him a few times and I always liked his sunny, country-boy attitude
and I really wish him the best, but, emotions aside, is he what Carlton
needs?
I hope I am proved wrong and he goes on to a long and successful career at
the Blues.

McLaren is an okay player, but he looked miles out of his depth in the 2004
G/F against Port's Brogan & Lade

Thats first pick in the Pre-Season in what is
shaping up to be the weakest Pre-Season
(I know there are usually only 1/2 guns but
even if Campo lists it won't be at the same level
as recent years for the first couple of picks)

However, given that he is not there to be No1 ruck
that is B.French who is there for the next two years
at least, McLarens stats show he was your best performed
ruck last season (not saying much but not shabby either)
Collingwood, Essendon, North were all worse off
even than you in the rucking stocks

Our team structure next season year will change drastically
Saddington (God I hope he stays on the track!!) will fill CHB
which means Thornton & Livo can double team rotating
between FB & CHB wherever help is needed. Lance can go
up forward again, Deluca can play CHF and McLaren & Bryan
will rotate off the bench to give Barnaby support

With a few of the younger players maturing next year
and a reasonable draw I will go on the record now that
anything less than 8 wins and 4 losses by less
than 3 goals is a failure.

No mention of Prenders FF?
And with DeLuca at CHF your 8 wins are looking very sick IMO.

I am a bigger wrap for DeLuca than Prender

It is interesting however you look at Bryan,
Deluca, McLaren & Setanta they are all 22/23
No doubt that next season is the make or break
for all of them and two of them will need to
step up for us and will survive and the other two
would be cut, you just couldn't see all four of
them going forward as borderline players at 24

Agreed, but Prenders is 25 or 26 now I think.
He's one very lucky footballer who seems to owe his place on the list
entirely to our lack of quality tall players.
The same could be said for DeLuca, Bryan, Livingston and O'Hailpin.
McLaren is still a bit of an unknown quantity but he wouldn't have to be a
world beater to be better than the others.
