i agree, 1) it's just soccer, grin. BUT, 2) fuck yeah!!!!!!!! an Aussie
team actually made it into the quarterfinals of a sport that we're
genetically shithouse at. Regardless of your opinions of soccer (and i dont
think much of it), you've gotta take your hats off to these boys for not
only gelling as a team (they dont play together very often at all) but also
holding a powerful soccer nation at bay when we're not a powerful soccer
nation. can't ask much more of them than that!?!?

anyway that's enough soccer hoo-hah for now. back to real mans footy ;)

The long-term share price of AFL Ltd. just dropped 10% last night, and
maybe the next TV rights value also dropped ~$30M..........

lol, if you consider that the only bit I watched
was the penalty shoot out only because I
turned over to see the final score and it happened
to be on as indicative of who the fuck cares
about watching soccer then the AFL TV rights
went UP!

I applaud the success of the soccer team
but it means little more than that to
AFL fans we just don't really give a toss
about what must be the worlds second
most boring game (I consider Handball
the single most boring team ball sport!)

It may well be, but it's a competitive marketplace for spectators as
well as TV viewers (with all the financial implications that go along with
that).

The AFL realise that soccer is a competitor, and if soccer get a higher
profile in Australia it will impact on the AFL.

No point denying it - or pretending that it won't - just because you think
the actual game is inferior.

AFL = played in the winter
Soccer = played in summer because couldn't compete
it will impact on BBall or cricket than AFL TV.

the only worry is getting the kids to play AFL instead of Soccer

It will also impact on the amount of money that will be out there for
sponsorships, as I am sure that a lot of Australian companies will
want to associate themselves with the Australian team if only for the
next year.
A bigger problem will be the increase in participation at a junior
level as good players dont grow on trees. And the talent pool for
Aussie rules will shrink.

aah the old Footy Show Syndrome... no one ever watches it, yet
all the people who never watch it, happen to see every part of it cos
they "just happened to turn over" at the right time.

WE ARE OFF TO THE WORLD CUP !!!!!!!!!

Ext User(Dave Turner)

- Australia hasnt been in the World Cup finals since 1974

- It was the first time that a penalty shoot-out victory has led directly to
a place in the World Cup finals

- Uruguay were champions in 1930 and 1950 (a powerful soccer nation in their
own right)

a bloody good effort i reckon.

but anyway, when does the Wizzie Cup start?

But only because of a really silly part of the game. Kick a ball and hope
the goal keeper goes the wrong way (since there is no time for him to
_react_ to the flight of the ball).

Why don't they decide all soccer games this way. It'd eliminate all the
boring time leading up to it....

You've obviously never watched "fours" in bowls.

More Aussie kids have played soccer more than once than any other footy.
But the drop off rate is very high. Possibly because the "tried more than
once" criteria include having to play it at school, and there isn't much
for a kid who likes playing soccer to go on with after school.
