It's 5pm on 5th Jan 2006. The AFL rights aren't yet a done deal, I
reckon, despite 7/10 appearing to trump 9's bid. The AFL are currently
reviewing the final bids and will then decide.

According to the Age, the AFL is p*ssed off at both 10 and 7, so don't
be surprised if they end up going with 9, despite 9's bid being
'trumped' by 20 million.

Why? The devil is in the detail. Both bids include 'contra' with 7/10
today valuing theirs at 87.5 million. But this is not a hard figure. It
is putting $ on to something that may be intangible.

Ch 9 may say "we'll mention the AFL offerings on the Footy Show" or "you
can have Sam and Eddie to host 5 official AFL functions per year at no
charge" etc.

Ch 9 say that is worth (say) an extra 5 million per year in contra. 7/10
would be offering the same sort of things, BUT if the AFL decide the
total 7/10 contra isn't - in the AFL's eyes - worth 87.5 million, things
get interesting.

The AFL may say "it's great guys, but we value it at just over 60
million". And therefore 9 wins.

So here we are at 5:08pm and I could be totally wrong. But it's fun to
speculate.

What was that old Klingon proverb from Kill Bill 1. Ah yes - "Revenge is
a dish best served cold". Isn't it, Andrew?

<snip>

And yep, right on cue...2 minutes after I hit Send, the AFL announces 7
and 10 have offically won.
