Hawk in court on damage charges

By Steve Butcher
February 4, 2006

HAWTHORN footballer Campbell Brown has appeared in court charged over a
drunken incident in which a convenience store worker was abused.

Brown, 22, appeared in the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Thursday charged
with criminal damage, wilful damage, using insulting words and using
indecent language.

Police prosecutor Senior Constable John Xydias said the footballer was
drunk when he entered a Hawthorn 7-Eleven store at 5.10am on June 19 last
year and went to an ATM. Brown removed an out-of-order sign from the
machine and tried to withdraw money.

Told it was not working, Brown verbally abused a store employee. As Brown
left the store, he struck and cracked the glass entry.

Senior Constable Xydias told Chief Magistrate Ian Gray that police had
decided not to recommend that the case be heard in the court's diversion
list. Diversion allows first-time offenders to avoid a criminal record,
but one of the criteria is they must admit the charges.

Mr Gray ruled Brown's age, attitude and history clearly justified
considering diversion.

The hearing was then adjourned for the victim to be notified. When it
returns to court, a magistrate will finalise the matter.

Brown appeared in court on the same day as Melbourne player Colin Sylvia.
Sylvia appeared over a drunken incident involving his girlfriend in Albert
Park last Sunday. A magistrate ordered Sylvia, 20, not to assault, harass,
threaten or intimidate Elise Whichello for 12 months.

When he can take on a whole team single handedly like his old man did, he
will be a star.

Clearly, injured players need to work 9am-5pm jobs to stop them going out
and being stupid.

i still haven't ruled out Mal taking on a whole team on behalf of his
son. he got a bit upset at Jeff Farmer a few years ago for roughing him
up a little. pretty funny stuff hearing him taking an anti-violence stance.

and Brown is probably stupid enough to use that line in his defence.

It's ok if she's not your mother or she's in a wheel-chair. Just as long
as you are young and stupid.

Toby [ who notes that Giovani was young and stupid once- but now he's not
young anymore :^) ]
