Watching Ten Victoria's coverage of the AGP this arvo, I was most
annoyed to see red bars down each side of the screen, effectively
turning a WS broadcast into a 4:3 one.

Anyone have any idea as to such silliness?

The F1 coverage given to Ten isnt widescreen - so they often do the rest of
the broadcast in 4:3 to keep consistant

That doesn't make sense. The coverage that I watched yesterday was WS.
Depending on what they were showing, the red bars would appear, then
disappear. It was fucking annoying, to say the least.

They appeared to vision switch between the official AGP vision and
locally "produced" (ie. Ch10) footage/interviews.

The actual footage of the race itself, and the practice sessions, is created
by a production unit who work for Bernie Ecclestone. They have their own
staff and equipment which are brought in for each race. They only have 4:3
equpiment.

Given that most Western European countries now use a 16:9 digital standard,
it would seem to be about time that BernieTV joined the 21st century.

The practice, qualifying and race broadcasts were in WS mode. They
merely added these red bars down the side. I switched between digital
and analog to compare the vision. The Ten Logo on the 4:3 picture was
hard up against the edge of the picture, while the "WS" one was still
some way off the red "bars" and the edge of the real picture.

When I view 4:3 pictures via digital I get the 4 black bars on all
sides.

Anyway, why would we not have Ten show the race in WS to the local
market?
