I'm looking for a game to play on a laptop, but the specs on the machine are pretty average, so I'm not looking for any new releases.
What kind of game am I looking for? Well, I'm glad you asked. :p
I'm pretty much after something in the style of the old Command & Conquer style of games. You know, point and click, build your defenses, upgrade your armies and gather resourses kind of game.
Any ideas on what to look out for or even links to free (legal) releases would be much appreciated. :)
Thanks.

Have you tried Battle Realms or Rise of Nations?
Age of Mythology?
These games are now below <$20.
Also read your PMs. ;)

Total Aniolation (sp)
Red Alert Command and Conquoer (sp) :p
Never Winter Nights (might be over your specs)
Age of Empires
Empire Earth
Umm all that come to mind but i am sure that will start you off.
PM and i might see what old CD's i have laying about upstairs for the above games for trade
Edit: Oh and you will have to return +10 also you nasty man :p

There are plenty of games like Warcraft and C&C out there. My favourite is the new one based on LOTR called Battle for Middle Earth 2. Its based on the C&C Generals engine.
Definitely pick up this one or even the first game in the series!

Battle for middle earth is huge - it requires 5GB for starters and requires a pretty good video card to run it. IMO I'd go with star wars empire at war. Only needs half the space (2.5 GB:p) and is made by the same guys that did The C&C series. Suprisingly it has amazing graphics but little requirements. I know you can get it for about $44 at some places. (As lintons post below - it does run on Geforce4:p:dD)

If it's the same laptop that made an appearance in the tech forum thread the other day, you're looking for a game to run on a Geforce4 mobile video card, correct?

Yeah, it's the same lappie with that card as discussed. :) I still haven't got the ram, but hope to in the coming weeks.
Thanks for all the replies so far guys. :)

OK well i forgive you this time, but only because it was super hero business you were dealing with.
Another game to look into is starcraft which hooked me for a while which if you are interested is another i might have upstairs which we could do a deal with.

Yep, Starcraft is a magnificent game to add to the collection.
Warcraft 3 shouldn't have much trouble running either, although it isn't on the budget list yet though and will be up around the $30+, although you could probably find it on ebay. :)
Common theme running here is blizzard, so I'll say try Diablo II as well (not the same genre, but that basicly completes their games catalogue) :p
As others have stated though, there's a number of games that fall into the Real Time Strategy genre,
Total annihilation
KK&D (although I wasn't a fan of that one)
The rest of the C&C series (you won't be able to run Generals though),
Age of empires series,
A few Warhammer games,
Empire earth series,
A large number of space war sims (homeworlds series for example),
Best off searching google with the RTS or real time strategy terms and find a few you like, and making sure the PC requirements fall in your range. I'll tell you now, probably the only problem you'll come across with most (not the older ones though) is the geforce 4. :)
Good luck.

Yeah the first one is 5GB as well but it does go for under $20. Got nothing against the game - i have it myself - the first time i played it the graphics just wow you:p But you do really need quite high specs for it to run properly without it freezing every minute or so.

Thanks for the tips peoples.
It's my birthday in a couple of weeks and I've been told to wait and see what happens in regards to getting any new (old release) games:rolling:. I've made it clear to the family that Warcraft III, Starcraft, C&C Generals and their expansions are now budget releases, so now I wait.

Dune 2000 is another good game that is similar to C&C, probably as close you going to get to C&C.
Actually, i think it was made by Westwood.

Hope you said you want a new laptop too. :(
The video card built into your current one will have a fair bit of trouble playing this game.

Oops, yeah I misread the specs last week and thought that I could play it on my PC but I used Gamespy's thing where it tests your System Requirements for a particular game and the PC even failed.:rolling:
Thanks for the tip about Dune 2000 headshot007. I've actually played it and it was fun. :)
