I'll bet you wouldn't even buy a $40 mobile phone,
so why would anyone buy a $40 STB.

I was in Melbourne about a month ago and they had these advertised. I went
in and they were sold out. A lot of their gear was "refurbished" warranty
returns, but I don't know if the STB's were.

What a ridiculous statement. Surprising as it may sound, many people
buy a mobile phone to make and receive phone calls, and send and receive
the occasional SMS. They do not want a camera, a colour screen or a
PDA so a $40 phone does the job required.
Similarly if someone wants a STB for an older TV, or smaller TV, then
why pay more than absolutely necessary - providing it works of course.

All of their stock is refurbished warranty returns. That's why they're
so cheap. But they all work, so you may as well buy them.

Using the same logic, I'll bet you wouldn't buy a $300K car, so why would
anyone buy a $300K bed?

Agreed.

With a TV like that, what purpose would a $40 STB serve?
Cheers
Steffen.

Let's see, they may want to watch ABC 2 or the SBS 2nd channel.
Oh yes and maybe their analogue reception is ghosty and nasty and digital
clears all that up for them..
Wouldn't that be $40 well spent?

Fair enough.

I didn't have much fun with stations that gave bad analogue reception
(not ghosts, though, just weak signal) after I got the toppy. Lots of
audio drop-outs, sometimes digital crap in the picture. I had to re-do
the antenna and wiring.
My question was only half-rhetoric, though. A friend of mine wants a STB
for his birthday, but cheap (<< $300) and without harddisk. He's got a
bottom-of-the range Samsung plasma and a $300 Sony receiver. I just
can't see the point in him getting a STB. All it would give him is
wide-screen and DD for a fair chunk of the program. He's certainly not
after ABC or SBS. I'm trying to convince him that he needs a harddisk,
and should go for something like the Humax Smart for $600.
Cheers
Steffen.

The same purpose a STB box serves on a large screen TV.
