Driving back from the snow, get waved down by two coppers in sleepy
Berridale. Well there these wo guys just standing there and bugger if
I know which one I should stop at so I go past the first one to pull up
at the next one. This guy says it is a random breath and license check.
Yah, yeah. As I hand over my license, the first older copper come up
to the car and asks "Is there anything wrong with your indicators?"
Uhh? What? Dont think so? Why? "You failed to indicate when I
indicated for you to pull over." Well I Sir, I was looking intently at
you to see what I should do and just plain forgot. "Dont do it again".
Is this a regular shakedown exercise? So what is the law on
indicators, must they always be given on changing lanes? Seems that I
learnt in SA they are only required to be shown if there is other cars
on the road.

Sounds normal for NSW cops to me. Bunch of smartarse pricks.
Don't worry, though - most couldnt be fucked writing out a ticket for that.

Yes indicators are installed on all vehicles, for a reason.
Not using them is not only lazy and inconsiderate, it is dangerous.

When I got my license (NSW) I was told that if you move more than a
metre off your tack then you should use your indicator. So that would
definitely cover changing lanes.
Common sense tells you that there's no need if there's no-one around to
see your indicator, but we're talking about LAW here.

Typical car-y head-up-your-arse, no-other-road-users-except-cars attitude.
"If you can't see another car you don't have to indicate........."
No wonder so many motorcyclists and cyclists get slaughtered by you witless
fucks. (and no wonder so many stupid car-ys end up under trucks or
head-onning eachother!)
It's a pity you didn't get the ticket; you might've learned to be a bit
more courteous (and pay some attention to your obligations) in the future.

Look at it from his point of view - he's flagging you down, and looks to
your indicators to tell whether you've acknowledged his instruction. He can
only tell if you are actually going to pull over from the motion of your
car, which is probably quite disconcerting, particularly when you end up
driving straight past him.
I don't think he was ever going to write you a ticket, rather I think he was
just looking for some common courtesy.

Hey..go easy on Andy, you self righteous bastards.....a cop jumps out in
front of you and in the heat of the moment you don't think to indicate..so
what....some of these cops just jump out and give you stuff-all time to pull
up let alone indicate your intention...a wonder more cops arent run over
flagging down cars.
Sounds like Andy just got one who was having a shit of a day and wanted to
give him a scare and get technical.....

Fuck orf!!
Indicators indicate 'intention' to turn.
The OP had absolutely NO intention to deviate from his chosen path.
Ergo, he didn't need to indicate just because a cop directed him to
turn from his chosen path. He had no intention in that regard.
Consider the requirement for indicating intention to turn. It's based
on distance.
Did the cops allow for that with their gestures/whatever they used to
indicate the requirement to get off the road?
Nope, you can bet on that.
So, according to them no matter what the OP did with the indicators,
it was always going to be 'illegal'.
Of course a magistrate would convict him, because of the Single Malt.
Not because the OP was in the wrong.

Yep, magistrate would convict because he did not his intention to deviate from his current path and direction.

Random breath tests are a top idea, I say. Get the drunks the hell off the road.
And using indicators should be second nature - they are your primary means of communicating with other road users.

The worst one I had was coming north over the harbour bridge. I'm in one of
the middle lanes and there's an RBT on the extreme left near the
observatory, just as as you come on the approach to the bridge. It's 2am so
I see these guys but I'm thinking they won't wave me down due to the
inherent danger of expecting someone to turn almost sideways across a
multilane lane to get to them. So I 'm looking and I'm looking and they're
ignoring me until I'm about next to them, except 2 or 4 three lanes tot he
right, when the cop suddenly races out and signals for me to pull over. I
have to jam on the brakes, luckily no-one is behind me, then wait stationary
in the middle of the road for traffic to clear in the inside lanes before
doing a near 90 deg turn to the side of the road.
You can't tell me that is not irresponsible from the cops POV.
