Driving back from the snow, get waved down by two coppers in sleepy
Berridale. Well there these wo guys just standing there and bugger if
I know which one I should stop at so I go past the first one to pull up
at the next one. This guy says it is a random breath and license check.
Yah, yeah. As I hand over my license, the first older copper come up
to the car and asks "Is there anything wrong with your indicators?"
Uhh? What? Dont think so? Why? "You failed to indicate when I
indicated for you to pull over." Well I Sir, I was looking intently at
you to see what I should do and just plain forgot. "Dont do it again".
Is this a regular shakedown exercise? So what is the law on
indicators, must they always be given on changing lanes? Seems that I
learnt in SA they are only required to be shown if there is other cars
on the road.

Nope, although many people don't bother if they think they are the only
car on the road.
Unfortunately, it's generally the car or motorcycle that you did 'not'
notice that crashes into you.

First I've heard of that and I got my license in Vic in 1970.
You must indicate in that situation, if the copper was in a bad mood he
could of given you a fine so consider youself lucky.

yes! The only speeding fine I've ever had (started driving in 1980) was in
fscking Berridale. They had a camera as you are exiting town on the snow
side... that 100 sign is a long way out, and you tend to start speeding up
towards it. snap.
The winter business is a nice earner and they send lots of extra police to
the area in order to ensure that they get as much business as possible.

Nothing unusal about that when it's quiet.

I have no idea why you guys persist in suggesting that cops have any
interest in raising revenue. We don't get one red cent of it and there's
never been any direction that I'm aware of at *any* level of policing to do
just that. The commander at your local station more than likely wouldn't
have known that the local police check these things. BTW, most people I
speak to about doing these additional checks usually say something along the
lines of, "it's about time you guys started checking these things". So
you're suggesting that cops shouldn't checks these kind of things? Lets see,
drivers that are disqualified, cancelled or suspended don't pose a risk to
other road users? Unregistered vehicles aren't an issue because those who
drive them have lots of money should anything untoward happen to your car
and a quick check for defects such as tyres with steel belts showing through
shouldn't be encouraged either.
>

But everything else is perfectly ok to continue through? :))))))
Tell me this, if a car ran straight into the side of your vehicle because
the tyres were bald and he lost control, turns out he was disqualified and
his car was unregistered AND he was stopped minutes earlier at RBT and
allowed to drive off what would you be saying in this NG? Cops can't win in
here.

All stationary RBT locations have to comply with strict workcover laws
pertaining to safety. They have been selected by traffic police and
adjudicated to be within the guidelines before it's approved for use. They
have to be properly lit, have ample visibility for oncoming traffic (this is
worked out by a formula distance over time) and have enough runoff area for
us to compete our duties. There are a number of other guidelines that it has
to comply with but I'm not going to discuss them here. BTW, how do you know
the cop was wet behind the ears and even if he was, why didn't you comply
with the direction that so many other vehicles did before and after you
left? Perhaps it was you that made a simple task difficult? Also, whatever
happen to people driving at a speed or alertness level whereby they can come
to a complete stop if required in an emergency?
BTW, vehicles moving from the left lane to the right just before an RBT
location are ALWAYS stopped.........it's not hard to work out why.
>
> I will state that I have never seen such a stupid set up since......
That same stupid set up complies with workcover laws. I wish workcover laws
operated the same way with drivers who don't concentrate on what they're
doing.

Actually, neither. It's a case of the cop doing what he is paid to do.
It's a case of a cop not being lazy. It's a case of a cop doing the whole
job instead of just getting the numbers over and done with. Come on
out to Campbelltown some time and see how *we* do RBT, where
the BT in RBT is insignificant.

So do we. But, we also support getting the unlicenced drivers
off the road, and we also support roadworthy vehicles and people
wearing seatbelts.

Exactly the point I was trying to make. The legislation was set up for
Random Breath Testing - and now it is being used as 'random vehicle
inspection'.
How far does it go - License check, Occupant check, registration check,
Tyre check - or as a couple of years ago on the Old Pacific Highway -
randomly pull over *EVERY* motorcycle and perform a sound check - even
on the quiet ones - Fancy being kept on the side of the road for a
couple of hours?

In QLD it has always been like this
when it was introduced we were told that you may have your licence and
rego checked as well
