I've decided I should best get a couple of new tyres for my 2001
Astra. Any recommended or not recommended suppliers on Sydney Northern
Beaches ? I'm thinking of Bob Jane T-Marts or Owen's Tyres at
Brookvale.

**I just fitted my Dunnydore with some El-Cheapo Pirellis. (P6000). After
living with Japanese tyres (Toyos and Bridgestones) for the last few
decades, I find the Pirellis very impressive indeed. They handle well and
are very quiet. Wet weather, dry weather, nothing seems to faze them. Still,
it's early days.

Something with Silica is normally best , ask the tyre dealer perhaps (
he might have a clue ?)

Owens recommended, and sold me, craptastic(tm) Olympic Overlanders
for the 4x4 'lux which were placed in the recycle bin around 1,500km
later (not to mention dangerous during their entire life, felt like
you were driving on a flat tyre all the time). They do have good
customer service and turn around time though.
Beaurepairs across from Warringah Mall have fairly slow service,
however had the correct tyres in stock quickly, and appear to know
how to torque wheel nuts.

If you want the best buy Michelin.
If you want good value GT Radials might be worth a look....

Recently bought a pair and very impressed with the quality of
construction. Took very little weight to balance (always a good sign)
and perform fine. No idea how long they'll last. Made in China, of
course.

You get to have your cake and eat it too: good grip and long
life.
I like Continental ContiEcoContact 3 myself.
http://tinyurl.com/q3c6d is a retailer finder for them.

If the currently fitted tires are wearing well then tell them no to the
obligatory wheel misalignment ( I do my own luckily)

The problem is finding a place that doesn't employ moron wheel alignment
'technicians'. At places like Bob Jane's you can often drive away with a
worse wheel alignment than you drove in with. It all depends on the quality
of the staff.
Watch your new fronts like a hawk immediately afterwards and at the first
sign of abnormal wear take it back to the tyre shop and demand another
wheel alignment. My last purchase from Bob Janes required three trips back
before the alignment was OK.

Went ahead and bought four (the two newer old tyres were even more
worn) Pirelli Dragons from the Bobster. We all agreed there was no
particular need for alignments but I'll keep an eye on 'em.....

Dragons...WOW, you didn't muck around.
Be interested to see how they last.

Are they something especially special - I'm not up to much speed
(probably a bad choice of words) with tyres ?
The two original Goodyears lasted 65,000 kms (and were still just
legal).

If tyres cost $200 a corner against a $80 cheaper tyre and you push its
limits, the extra $480 wont buy you much in the way of panel damage I think.
Tyre prices are all reletive to your driving style. My old Hiace would do
pretty damn well with the hard as nails Korean rubber (plastic) but for the
4x4 Id rather spend the $250 a corner that will do the trick.

Dragons are one of the Pirelli high performance tyres...haven't looked at wear index but I'd suspect they'll wear pretty fast.....interesting to see.

But if you're smart and don't drive like an idiot, and the tyres need replacing at 20,000 instead of 65,000 then uou've spent an exta $1,400+ and never needed the extra grip of the more expensive tyre.

Lots of Bob Jane tyre stores are franchised so like all franchised shops
you get good and bad.
My former next door neighbour owned the Bob Jane store in Footscray for
many years, I especially enjoyed getting my tyres for cost price.
Too bad he sold out:-(
