My car has a 12-pin socket for trailer lights (a row of 7 pins and a
row of 5).

I need to buy a plug to suit it, but I can only find a 7-pin version (a
single row of 7 pins). Can someone tell me if a 7-pin plug will fit
into the 12-pin socket? The pins are in the correct layout, but it
depends on the housing.

it accepts both versions of the flat plug (5 & 7 pin flat).
Don't worry.

The 12-pin is an extension of the 7-pin.

My AU has a 12-pin connector. I plugged a 7-pin trailer plug into it a
week ago and it all worked fine.

In theory, the flip-top lid is less secure because it doesn't lock the
connector together as effectively as a 7-pin plug in 7-pin socket or a
12-pin plug in a 12-pin socket.

The 12-pin connectors are available, but would typically need to be
ordered because most shops don't stock them. Aside from the extra wires
for fog lights, accessories, winch power, etc., the extra row are larger
pins and there is a 2nd earth pin. If this is the only vehicle that you
need to plug into, the 12-pin could be worth ordering. Otherwise, go
with the 7-pin.

The state of infrastructure in New South Wales is a disgrace.
I'm a Libran Engineer. I don't argue, I discuss.

5-pin flat connector?!? WTF??? Is this a 7-pin with a couple of pins
missing or something?

The 2nd row of a 12-pin connector certainly can't be used instead of the
7-pin!

Not exactly, a 5 pin connecter has the red driving lights, brake lights
and indicators, the 7 pin also has trailer brakes.
Unfortunatly the wiring is also aranaged differantly.

Seems there is a 7 or 12 pin plug option. Read all about it Athol.

My hookup on my vehicle has the 12 pin socket, my trailer has a 7 pin plug.
Never seen a 12 pin plug till my browse tonight but, hey, I learnt something
new.
