Not sure what is causing this thing to fault like it is. It started
just know and then but is happening all the time.
If Im driving along with anything electrical on it starts to short,
shuts the radio off, headlights flashing on and off, gauges jumping all
over the place ( only the speedo and tacho do this)
When I have my stereo on and drive along it just shuts off. If at night
time with the headlights on, come up to a corner indicate and it starts
to short a bit, put my foot on the brake and the lights cut out, take
my foot off and they come back on.
Any help please

If *everything* affected, some problem with connection to battery and
the alternator (IOW work back from power sources).

It's almost certainly an electrical (wiring) problem -- which has
nothing to do with the car's electronics.
There's a bad connection somewhere, which could be narrowed down
considerably by identifying which part of the wiring is common to the
things that lose power.
It's unlikely to be a short circuit (and I suspect your definition of
a short is somewhat different to mine). Fuse(s) would've long since
blown if it was.
Any competent auto electrician who's familiar with the model would
probably be able to locate the problem in a jiffy.

Check out the connections around the battery, there a few smaller wires
connected directly to the battery and one of those could have a bad
connection.
Also check the connections on the relays near the battery.
The ignition switch on my son's EA sometimes has a bad internal
connection which makes the radio and a few other things cutout but
moving the key around fixes it, yours sounds a lot worse than his but
its possible your ignition switch is in a bad way.

Check all the wiring to the battery and also check the connections to the
fusable links. Sometimes they connections overheat and cause a bad
connection. That will cause the problems you describe. Good luck.

Standard operational procedure for all Ford drivers.
Don't fret though, VW's do the same PIA thing, too.
I wonder if there's a commonality of Engineers names there somewhere.
Hell, I'd bet on it:-)

I've never experienced this problem with any of the many Ford's I've
owned, headlight switches are a known problem but ignition switches?
This one has done over 350,000klms so its not surprising a couple of
things are worn out:-)

Many moons ago, I drove Falcon taxis.
Defo ignition switch/key related problems was a factor.
Enough of a problem for quite a few of us to have machines sustain
damage due major backfires with nary a question raised by those that
should have been alarmed by the matter.
Not to mention the surprised formerly slumbering victims in the knob
areas, or course:-)

Yeah kidnapping and stuffing a terroist in the boot of a taxi will cause
some conflict.

there are shit loads of them in there........could be a white coat and
floor heating sort of job.
Water in headlights is common for shorts, never seen speedo's jump from
shorts though, thats a drive gear in the transmission, from my EA
experience,it happens when you deliberatly do not put oil in the
gearbox cause it just pisses out again,in time they stop working all
together,and so dose the transmission.
