Is a plasma worth it? The price for the SD is around $2300 now and I saw a
Teac for $1700 the other day. Do they keep on going or are they another
consumer society buy?
I want one but don't want a piece of shit in a couple of years.

Sounds good thanks for the info The sed looks good but the prices shall be
up there to start off like any other new technology.Right here and now not
2010 the plasma is the only one to me that makes sense IF it doesn't blow
up.
From a site I googled...
"The main battlefield for SED panels is expected to be the large-screen TV
market, in the 40- and 50-inch range, where already liquid crystal display
(LCD) TVs are challenging the established position of plasma display panel
(PDP) models. Prices are steadily dropping, with TVs in the 40-inch class
expected to hit about 5,000/inch by around 2010. In contrast, Canon and
Toshiba believe that a volume production stance cutting SED cost to
significantly under 70,000 by 2010 will make it possible for them to compete
with LCD panels and PDPs on an equal price footing. "

Actually since then they have announced the first SED screens will start at
55 inches.
Below that size we will be stuck with plasma and LCD, unless OLED comes out
with smaller models.

Personally I don't think any SD plasma or LCD screen is worth buying,
even if they were only $500 for 42 inch, because they are NTSC
resolution and incapable of displaying the full resolution of PAL DVDs
and PAL TV.
Personally I wouldn't touch the cheaper brands such as LG, Samsung,
Teac, etc: too many horror stories.
My 4 year old HD Hitachi plasma is still going strong, although we watch
less than 10 hours a week on it. It won't reach half brightness for many
many years yet, and when it does I can simply turn up the brightness and
contrast (which are below the half way mark at the moment and nowhere
near as bright as the factory settings).

Thanks for the advice. I don't really care about HD and SD because I
personally aren't too picky on picture quality just as long as it is good
and big and lasts more than 5 years at 60 hours a week.
