So off went looking for a large 4 cyl,..auto or manual. Not many about. The
yards are full of Falcodores for $6k for a decent looking model, There was a
1990 BMW auto with 100,ooo ks,..nice tidy car,..but not what she wanted,
plus I mentioned she might need another such loan if the thing buggered-up
in a big way.

There was one 95 Apollo (Camry) in red and manual 4 cyl for $8K and a few
Magnas 4 cyl around 96-7 for $6K. Then we went to a yard where I had bought
my LTD 8yrs earlier and the Camry 3 yrs ago. The story was the same,..large
cars abound with just a couple of Magnas or early (80s) buzz-boxes. One 97
Magna sport was $4.7k, but it had 320,000ks on it and looked a bit sad.

Then we saw "IT",..a 97 Hyandai Sonata Levant in a burgandy colour with
133,000 ks on it. for $8k. The darn thing looked very spunkoid for a
female,..all the pretty bits plus a loaded interior including boot CD
changer, Pioneer head unit plus integrated radio, leather seats, about 100
lights on dash telling you which position everthing except the electric
seats were in. CC, PS,AC etc etc. The engine was a V6 2.5 litre with a 4
speed auto. The thing drove like a new car with just one light rattling
sound over bumps from the back.
The 2.5 V6 felt very responsive with the "power" tranny switch on,..all in
all a nice car. The doors opened and shut like a door should ie no missing
the second latch like the Camry does (even after a lube).

Realise the car has some miles on it,..but when said daughter offered
cash,..they took $7K,..plus it had warranty for 3mths (legislation).

This car is a '97. No wonder they have climbed in populatory with the
compact-luxobarge brigade,..they seem to really be a cheap but nice buy in
that bracket.

Can't be a 2.5L if its a '97 model. The '97 model (old shape) had a 3.0L
V6, while the '98 (newer shape) had a 2.5L V6.

David Z is correct, if its a 97 model its either a 3.0L V6 or a 2.0L
4banger.
But other than that minor detail it sounds like you got a good deal.
The National average price (acording to redbook.com) is $5,300 - $7,300

If you had've waited another month or two you could've got a 380 for that
money :))

Jason,

One of my Daughters cars, 2000 Accent dropped the drivers side window.
I pulled it apart and was pleasantly surprised with the build and design
inside that door. Nothing like the crap that was in the earlier excels.

A plastic border had split and the cable came off the slide. I was able
to buy a replacement slide mechanism, without the motor!! and put it all
back togethet. The window glass had two holes in the bottom, where it
is held to the slide by two clips with screws. Bloody thing is better
built than Falcdore???

The parts man at Hyundai (Ford Mustang nut), said the company had come a
long way and the mechanics actually liked working on them. Oh I also
chained the timing belt as the accent had done 90,000km. It was by far
less complicated and easier to do than the Mazda and Camry one's I'd
done before :-)

Whole thing totally changed my thoughts on Hyundai :-)

Its a 3 litre (stamped on intake) and its date is 11/97. The salesman is a
tool...

Actually,...it's not a bad buy for a country-town car. With a change of
those OEM mags,..I'd not knock it back,..of course I'd have to beg
forgiveness to the 351LTD every time I drove the Sonata.

The Sonata is a decent car in its class.
The silly bastard was the guy who bought it without even knowing what engine was in it.

Jason,

In that case you will be happy :-)
One of the easiest FWD's I've ever worked on, similar to my Subaru Sherpa,
it is also user friendly.

Ahhh yes, the ultimate silly bastard pipes in.
Tell me, how many cars have you bought without knowing what engine was in them...a dozen or so?
Ever bother to check VIN nos and engine nos...nah, didn't think so.

Does it matter?

They were happy with the car & bought it. Who gives a shit what size engine
it has if you find it drives okay?
