Sounds like something of light construction eg heat shielding rattling or a
bearing is squeaking, maybe alternator brushes. Use a long screw-driver
*carefully* to find the source if its the alternator or some other
peripheral. As to tin-ware,..grab a rag and apply pressure to see if it
stops.

Meant to say you use the long screwdrivrt as a stethoscope. Great care is
needed that it doesn't slip onto a moving part!. A short time ago, a proper
machninery sthoscopes were for sale for about $10 at autobarns and Clints.
The probe is just a metal pin which is positioned against various parts of
the motor with a transducer feeding the ear-tubes.

Damn those bearing manufacturers...or are you suggesting that MM should destruction test each bearing prior to installation.

Yeah,..I was thinking that. No lube included during bearing manufacture, or
they stuffed-up fitting the bearing to the pulley housing and buggered the
tracks. They then slowly shed pieces of case-hardening as the balls run over
the brinnelled track. This causes the noise as the debris increases in
volume.
