Drove a VZ (3.6L) to Texas yesterday.

All up about 430km driving all up. Computer sates 630km to go, fuel tank
gauge showing about 60% to 2/3 full.

I dont own the car (work car).

Is 1000k + what you get from a VZ (mainly highway driving). Can any owners
confirm this? Or is the computer being a bit ambitious?

Fuel tank is what, 75L? I'd expect a best effort of 10L/100km ...
therefore maximum range is around 750km.

My car defied logic the other day.
It's an old '87 toyota supra with a recent engine upgrade a twin turbo
inlie 6, and its quite thirsty when you want to go fast. but anyway i
filled the tank right up, cost about $87, started on a long trip, as i
was driving the fuel guage was going down pretty fast! i'd traveled
70KM since filling up and the fuel gauge was already showing half.

I was worried i was literally leaking fuel, so i stopped at the next
servo to fill up again, and it only took 4.02 liters before it
overflowed out onto the ground.

So 4L/70KM (or 1 Litre will take me 17.5KM) which seems pretty farkin good!!
How is this even possible when i'm pretty sure they (280HP 1jz-gte 2.5L
motor) are rated at something like 10-12L/100km *scratches head*

Also this was not highway driving but twisty mountain roads where i gave
it a poke a few on a few occasions.

I can't argue with the facts, which seem to defy logic.

Commodore fuel guages (when they're working) are always out. No wonder
the trip computer is confused.

You would have to expect better than 10L per 100km on the highway.

My AU2 (68L fuel tank) has done over 800km on a long highway trip

Err the 3.6L isn't a good engine by any stretch of the imagination.
Don't expect anything great from it.

Very ambitious.
Computer will correct itself when it gets a decent reading from the petrol guage.
I used to fill mine when it read 1/4 tank because you just never knew.

I get 8.5-9 litres per 100km on a pure highway cycle cruising with the
VT series 1
so it's more than capable.

A mate recently got 7.3/100km with three passengers on a run of 400 odd ks.
His VZ 3.6 is returning just under 10l/100km around time.

Had a similar thing happen after turboing my Starlet.
Got 250km on 12 litres, somehow. Including a long, popular winding stretch
that was driven with gusto.
It's never been that efficient before or since, unfortunately.

I find that the VZ trip computer is very accurate - it doesn't use the fuel
guage to determine how much fuel has been used.

Sorry, I'm wrong - I believe it *does* use the fuel guage for the "distance
until empty" figure, and yes, that can be way off. However, if you calculate
it yourself, using the "fuel used" readout, *that* will be more accurate
because that figure is related to the actual fuel consumed, not the fuel
guage readout. (and I find that this one is indeed very accurate)

Nice! Mind if I ask how much the upgrade cost?

Usually I find this sort of thing is explained by differences in
the slope of the driveways where you do the 2 fillings. It
easily affects the amount of fuel you can get in by a few
litres.

The VZ trip computers, as well as virtually every other model, is always
out - that is why there has been so many firmware changes to try and correct
customer complaints about trip computer inaccuracies.

VYBerlinaV8

The trip computer component that shows litres used and distance travelled is quite accurate on my VY. The distance to empty function is not nearly as reliable.

In a 6 cyl VZ I would think a highway average of around 8 l/100km would be possible if driven gently and to the speed limits. Remember these cars are geared very high, so at 100km/h they are only turning over at around 1700 rpm. My VY (5.7l V8) has done as low as 8.2 l/100km on a trip down the coast once - the traffic was quite heavy, but cruising at a consistent 90 km/h, at which my engine is turning over at about 1500 rpm.

The grand cherokee's trip computer was pretty much the same it was very
inaccurate but then again I wouldn't put any faith in trip computers a full
tank and the odometer does me fine.

Even remembering my LJ Torana with a fuel gauge that has its own mind.

Worst I ever had was on a HQ. It would run out showing anywhere up to a
quarter full. On one occasion it cut out coming up to the Edgeworth turn off
on the Wallsend - F3 link road. I managed to coast just around the corner,
where the grade took over. Coasted all the way down Minmi Road to Main Road
(couple of K's) with all the lights working in my favour - GASP!!!

Even coming to a halt at the Main Rd lights, I was then able to coast onto
Main Rd, and roll along till I just made it into the servo. Finally rolled
to a halt (no brakes) with the petrol filler opposite the bowser. No point
buying any lotto tickets, I used up my whole life's supply of luck right
there.

HQ's were a funny thing a fuel gauge that acts like a drunk and no engine
temp gauge.
Luckily my Calais fuel gauge is spot on.

How many times do I need to say gauge!!!

I had a Mk1 escort with a duff fuel gauge. I once rolled it from Monbulk to
Ferntree Gully. I pulled up to the bowser just as it ran out of steam. It
must of been about 10ks down the mountain. My mate and I couldn't believe
our luck.
