View Full Version : Value of my car?

Hi all,
After much gnashing of teeth, we've decided to keep my wife's Golf and
sell my 2001 Astra SRi, and cancel the Golf GTI order too.
The question now is how much the Astra is worth, and I'd really
appreciate suggestions from you guys.
It's a 2001 2.2 litre 5 speed manual Holden Astra SRi, with body
coloured skirt kit (factory don't paint it), aftermarket JVC and Alpine
sound system which cost me about $1500 installed, tinted windows, dealer
fitted alarm system, and tow-bar. It's done 180,000 kms - yes one
hundred and eighty thousand - and has stone chips on the front end that
you would expect from that many kays but the body is perfectly straight
and the paintwork elsewhere is in perfect conditions. It has been
serviced according to the manufacturer's recommendation for severe
driving conditions, including oil changes every 7,500 kms, so basically
it's been serviced twice as often as standard.
It still has all the original parts except for tyres, brakes and wipers
so it's been very reliable. It probably needs two new tyres and a
windscreen to pass roadworthy. New tyres, even average ones are about
$130 each, and decent ones are $200 each. I'm inclined to give the buyer
the option the better tyres if they want to pay me a little bit more. Or
should I just buy the cheapies and get rid of this thing as quickly as
possible?
Looking at drive.com.au, I could privately buy a 2002 model with under
100k kms for about $18k, and a 2001 model with unknown kays for $17.5k.
So my guess is that my car is worth $15k with a roadworthy certificate.
Is it worth getting the car detailed? The interior could certainly use
it and the paint could do with a polish.
Thanks for any help guys.

I'd say put some cheap tyres on it. Remove the CD system and reinstall the
original.
IMO I cant see you getting 15k with that many k's. There's plenty of simular
cars around with less.

It depends on how you sell it of course. My guess would be 11-14k.

Going by carsales.com.au you'll most likely get around 14k with a r/w.

After-market add-ons do not add value to a used vehicle. Its best you remove
them and replace with the original, as another poster has suggested.

More km's means LESS money for you.

You won't make a profit from more expensive tyres. Get the cheapest tyres
that suit the car.

According to redbook, 130,000 km will get you $15k:
http://www.redbookasiapacific.com/au/vehicle/prices.php?key=HOLD01KK
At 180,000 km, my guess is $10-12k.

Presentation and looks are important in selling a used car.

Abso-fuckin-lutely :-) Has a car yard ever not detailed a car (besides of
course "as traded" cars)?

Agree,..Absolutely get it detailed. Can add much more than the detail cost
as long as the paint comes up with a buff which I would imagine it does.

It will be worth Redbook value, and usually $2k less if you want a quick
sale (i.e. 2 -3 weeks).
Anything that's not factory/original (see below) will reduce the worth in
the eyes of most buyers.
The Tow Bar can go two ways. Some people will see it as a plus, others will
be wary of it - particularly on an Astra.

Thank you Kym, and to everyone else who responded to my post.
My plan is to get it detailed and advertise it for $14,990 with a
road-worthy certificate. I'll leave the sound system in which may make
it a more attractive buy but won't really be worth anything.
If someone offers me $13k on the spot I'll try to push them up a bit,
but $13k would be good.
Redbook may say the average national sale price is X, but I think it's
more logical to look at the price of others currently for sale and set
my price accordingly, taking into account the condition and kays.

That doesn't work if the other's aren't selling or sell much cheaper than
advertised. It's possible that one particular model of car has a lower value
that owners would expect and they are all asking too much. Although this is
more likely to happen to magna owners than astra :-)
