I am looking at upgrading our TV. There seem to be advantages both ways
between LCD and plasma but I've norrowed it down to Sony's 40" LCD (the
1000:1 contract ratio one) and the Pioneer 43" plasma which has good
reviews.
Am I on the right track? Any advice would be great.
Thanks

Which one do you prefer?
Which one looks to have the better picture- TO YOU??
Take along your favourite DVD, get it hooked up properly and take a look.
No one else can decide for you...

Do that yes but....
In general, Plasma have a better picture for TV and Movies but are
only really available in 40 or so inches
LCD is better if you may want to hook up a PC or want a smaller TV
Plasma have burn in, LCD have bad pixels and a plastic screen that is
easily damaged and marked
IMHO

And remember running a plasma contributes more to global warming if
you want to help get rid of those barren polar ice caps quicker ;-)

Plasma screens do not burn in anymore. And who wants to leave their TV
on all day with some static DVD menu showing anyway? Even my 4 year old
plasma does not suffer from the TV network watermarks.

The good ones don't, with a bit of care.
Panasonic recommend a certain procedure in the first 100 hours or so.
Basically lower the brightness and contrast and do not run 4:3 in
those first few hours.

I don't know where you got that information from.
I purchased my 50" Panasonic Plasma screen last September and have never
heard of such a "recommendation" from Panasonic or anyone else for that
matter.
The Panasonic plasma screen is just fantastic and i've had no problems at
all with it. Couldn't be happier.

I've had probs with my Panasonic. When I display closed captions on
teletext Page 801, it works fine in the shows but then craps out in the
ads and won't come back until I manually reset it. And it's not easy to
take a 60 kg 127 cm plasma screen back to base for service.

It's on their website. I checked it out when I was looking at
different brands of plasma tv's
I went with an LG btw.

I got an LG 50" Hi Deff Built in Tuner etc 2 weeks ago. the picture is amazing. so clear and crisp.
I looked at em all and watch a lot of hi def transmissions at the store very difficult to tell all brands apart.
Dont get an SD you will regret it in a few months, if you can afford it go HD.
At the end of the day it picture quality then the design of the unit as this thing is going to be looked at by all.
good luck
