For those that haven't seen the notices on channel 7...
From http://seven.com.au/digital :
Seven Sydney transmission change
The Seven Network advises that we will be changing the guard interval on
our digital television transmissions from 1/8 to 1/16. The change has
already been implemented in Melbourne and will be implemented in Sydney
on the morning of Tuesday 18 April 2006.
Owners of some set top boxes and integrated digital televisions may need
to either do a channel re-scan on the set top box (through the menu
set-up options) or to delete all channels then do a complete rescan of
all digital channels.
Scott.

Could you enlighten those not in the know what a guard interval is?
Thanks.

This should lead to a discussion as to why the change in guard interval
is needed and what (if any) improvements for the general public will
come of it...
Any suggestions, anyone?

For DVB-T Services addressing fixed and portable receivers, the guard
interval is generally viewed as a “necessary evil”, because it consumes
channel bitrate capacity, but it remains necessary to make the DVB-T
receivers able to cope with the delayed replicas of the original signal
- the echoes.
Networks using a shorter guard interval will enjoy an increase of
available channel bitrate whilst the receivers will achieve slightly
better mobile performance.

So home viewers are to be sacrificed to help those watching whilst driving!?

"Networks using a shorter guard interval will enjoy an increase of
available channel bitrate" indicates that we should get improved bitrates on
HD or SD or both. There has been speculation that Seven may use the extra
bandwidth to change to 1080i or possibly 720p HD.

No noticeable difference here, although my reception was bsically perfect
to start with anyway. The Humax PVR needed a re-scan of channel 7 only,
whilst the DSE box handled it without a rescan.

My Windows Media Center seems to have handled the changes.
