View Full Version : Best 32" TV for least pciture delay

In these days of fancy electronics all the LCDs, Plasmas and even the new
CRTs (100Hz progressive) have digital electronics to do fancy image
improvements etc. From what I can see that these can introduce a delay in
the video, so if you are using the video source for audio, then the audio
can be ahead of the video, up to 200ms or more.
Anyhow, I am now in the situation that the 12 yo TEAC is now on its last
legs and doing the fade in fade out show. In my system it is the monitor
only, with a combined VCR/DVD/AMP and a digital STB. So I want to replace it
of course with something with a low video processing time.
So am I too worried about this? Will most things I look at be OK. Or have
people been having problems like this when they have surround systems etc.
Would anyone recommend any technology or brand over another.
Thanks
Opus

I have never encountered the problem you describe with sound lag
though I only have about 5 TV sets in my house (I wish my wife would just
learn to throw stuff out <rolls eyes>)and I have friends with a high end
86cm 100Hz TV (brand eludes me ATM)
maybe its just you :-)

OK. I am not saying I have the problem. Just don't won't to be stuck with
such a problem. I have heard that some TVs use up to 7 fields (3 1/2 frames)
to do their fancy predicive processing etc. - that would be 70ms plus
porcessing time. Well that's OK if you use the TV for sound. Anyhow I may be
mad and it's not a problem - but no trouble to check.

Well I have encountered it plenty of times, but only on digital. Was
happening (slightly) tonight on Insight and has happened on most episodes of
The Chaser. I've tried different receivers for the sound but it still
happens. I reckon its either my DGTEC 2000A or the stations here in
Melbourne.

That's a different issue - a synchronisation problem. Proabably more to do
with your Dodgytec STB. Other cheap STBs have this problem as well. The OP
is worried that perfectly synchronised signals will become unsynchronised
because the digital image processing in the TV will delay the video, while
(s)he listens to undelayed audio via an audio system.

If you're a video engineer then perhaps it can be taken in context as it
describes your quals. However, if you work in say, the make-up dept,
then really, it's irrelevant.
I'm just wondering if you mentioned it to merely give credence to what
you're saying, and hoping that we'd accept it at face value.

lol yeah that was a good comeback!
anyway could the
Phosphorescence
of the TV screen be lower than the equivalent of the cinema screen.
therefore both are 'seeing' what is fedback to their eyes of different
technology.
so they should conduct their pissing match while in the same room using a
control source.
giving this pissing match a scientific basis for comparing.

Sorry mate, BL is right. I also worked in television broadcasting and have
done a lot of film and video editing in my time. A one frame lag or lead
between video and audio is definitely noticeable when you have spent a lot
of time getting it right.
It's nothing to do with being a "pretentious wanker", it's about experience
in your profession and attention to detail.
