I've only seen up to current tv airings

my take is this: the dharma group are studying the magnetic poles of the
earth. the magnetic poles seem to be shifting and will flip over to the
opposite sides. this will only harm territorial animals who rely on the
magnetic poles for a sense of direction and where home is, however a side
effect of the eventual flip is that the magnetic protection we have from
solar winds fluctuate too far leaving great holes (the edges can be seen as
aura's in the night sky) and the increase of solar radiation will see a
massive rise in cancer. the previous big hole was the Bermuda triangle. this
show talks about a new hole located between the artic and Australia.

the island was quarantined because of the danger of radiation initially,
however the scientists developed a machine that created its own magnetic
protection in the hope that one day when the poles do shift, they will have
the solution to protecting humanity from the solar radiation.

the button is to keep the machine from resetting

My theory is that what ever the computer does could have been done automatically. So inputing the code must be a way of ensuring that there is a person present for some reason.

No. I switched to Lost one day to see Fatty visiting a farm in Australia.

The actress playing an Australian woman was doing some sort of
horrendous american/aussie/british/gawd knows what else mangled accent.

It is all a virtual reality psychological experiment, those who die
'failed' the experiment and are taken out of it.

There are many parts of the show that hark back to psychological
experimentation. The button being the obvious standout.

Note, I have seen all the episodes from the US, but I have had that
theory for a while.

I know it is crappy, but it sure makes everything neat for the writers
in the end. People would obviously be pretty pissed if they pulled that.

I suppose the only nice thing about this concept is at the end of the
show we find out that Jack is really just some bum, Locke is a pilot,
blah, blah, blah.

my princible theory of relative existance is that it's all in my head, i'd
hate for a tv show to reflect that.

That's the same plot as this movie: http://imdb.com/title/tt0076909/
(Don't click the link if you don't want the plot of this movie to be
spoiled. It is however an obscure 70s movie.)

Makes sense.

Be careful posting theories which are made much more likely by
events in episodes not yet shown in Aus.

Ha. Reminds me of the Back to Reality episode of Red Dwarf where
each of their "real" identities disgust them.

A Committee is a group of people who individually can do nothing, but
as a group decide that nothing can be done.

It might renew my Interest if Gilligan was reincarnated and made a cameo.
And it might be a bit more believable if somebody would 'try' to build a
radio transmitter out of coconut shells or something.

I refuse to watch it until someone makes a giant thermometer out of
coconut shells, shoves it into the ground and pronounces that the volcano
is about to explode.

I think it is the best idea anyone can come up with, seeing that the show is
not supposed to be supernatural.
I hope it's wrong, tho.

Another idea I just thought of is Alternate Universe where Supernatural is
the norm.
In our Universe the plane has not crashed, but has reached its destination
safely.
Perhaps someone else has also already mentioned this.

Yet another thought is that the Island is a wormhole or some SF point (I
can't recall atm the scientific term) in time and/or space.

And yet another: it is some alien experiment; there may be some Flying
Saucer somewhere on the Island.

Yes, there is the idea that it all someone's dream or nighmare.
I hope that's wrong too.

Yes, this time I did notice the :)
and I'm not serious either.
LOL
