View Full Version : Brained them & testing the fuel [LPG] quality....long-ramblings

Yeah LPG is falling in price, cracked it for 39.9CPL, bout bloody time
too! 50.0+CPL was WAY to much to pay for fuel-off-cuts.
ULP and that DIEsel-rubbish are heading north and racing towards
$1.50/L, LPG heads south.Get with the program guys
Anyway been doing my own real-world testing on LPG fuel brands and have
to say i have found marked difference in mileage vis-a-vis Shell/United
brands [Not as good as a Lab-Rat-Test, but good and long enough
in-field-real-world test]
UNITED is about the cheapest going, but its rubbish LPG [must be made
in NSW?] cannot crack it for 500km from a tank no matter how many times
i try.Not sure if its Caltex/BPblended ot imported or whoever is
suppling them? Also what is its specific Propane/Butane % combo?
SHELL, now that is a QUALITY product, [Shell have replaced its nozzle
too, gone back to the same as the all the others, which is harder to
squeeze but you can now jam something in it so u dont have to hold it
on] its normally only 1 cent more but vouchers etc need to be taken
into consideration etc.
Mr.Haymes paint "Quality cost money, you get what you pay
for"...indeed!
Testing was carrried out over 12 tanks of LPG using the same route and
same time as much as possible, switching fuel brands every fill and
driving in normal manner ie no WOT from traffic lights [I find it
better if i have to *try* and spank a V8 to immediatly switch it to ULP
as its extra HP boost, really need a rolling wheel dyno to compare, but
yeah its much more crisp and grunts miles more than on LPG,even for
overtaking i switch to ULP pass rapidly and switch back to LPG ,kinda
like NOX system [dont try this with a dedicated LPG system :-) LOL]
So United in the 485 - 495km per tank range
SHELL just braining them NEVER less than 550km and knocking on 570km
mark range, well over +10% more
To make it fair the LPG tank was completely drained [once again dont
try this with a dedicated LPG system] as its running out you lift off
the throttle so you keep running the engine but you speed continues to
drop till it finally stalls, this can add another 3 - 5km so both
brands of fuels where run right down to stall, then switch over to ULP
and head to servo ASAP as that ULP stuff is precious!
Its important when doing these types of tests that the tank be filled
to max. NOT 85% cut out, in mine it means buying between 81 - 84L of
LPG [Not bad, filling 84L in a 82L water capacity tank, must be in the
fuel lines or do i smell a rat?] and having the fuel pump display
"NO-FLOW" and hear the compressor near the tank switch off = LPG...full
tank
It works out to [On Shell] to approx. 6.80km/L ...14.70%.....5.8 cents
approx. per km, cannot walk for that....

Points and goes "HAH HAH!" {Simpsons style} try $0.22 to $0.25 for
DIEsel-rubbish.
A litre of it goes a lot further than a litre of LPG.
LPG would be my 2nd choice. ULP - not a chance in hell I'll buy another
vehicle that uses it.

Speaking to one the neighborhood blokes yesterday who works in a
refinery here in Brisbane's , he was saying filling with fuel there is
under 50 cents a liter , someone is making lots on it .

I can go further for the same money. :-p

ULP? That's mower fuel. Reminds me - the container for the mower is empty.
Maybe I should look at converting it to LPG too. It uses about 40L of ULP
per annum. :-p
BTW, I'm hearing more and more about diesel motorbikes. One guy is just
about to fit a (Yanmar?) diesel into a Royal Enfield, and apparently he
only intends to run BioD. Maybe you could convert or get rid of your ULP
motorbike. :-)

Yanmar is correct, they used to (maybe still do) make small diesels even
an air cooled V twin which could be suitable for a bike.
I've worked on a couple that were fitted to yachts.
I remember one particular job because it was a bit of a laugh, the owner
decided to inspect the engine before heading off for the Sydney to
Hobart, for some reason best known to him he removed the head "to make
sure everything inside was ok", after he reassembled it it was making a
terrible knocking noise.
When I removed the head I could see that the piston had been hitting the
head gasket which is just a round copper ring.
Further investigation found that the piston on tdc goes past the top of
the sleeve into the gasket, turn the engine to tdc, fit a new gasket
over the piston, refit the head and all is well when the engine restarted:-)
The owner promised not to touch it again:-)

This actually came up in a thread in performance forums - someone there
is doing a trek somewhere around India and the himalayas, on such a
bike, as part of a group, with the option to buy said bike (the petrol
versions afaik, and 'new') at end of trek. I must admit I was
interested.
I want to see Bob Brown do it, he'll come back and say "I'm not me
anymore" (someone will get that)

In Sydney's north west this morning, LPG ranged between 49.9 and 59.9c/l
Even so I am considering converting the old Chev to LPG. 10 mpg is not nice when I am paying nearly
150 c/l for premium ULP.

The US Marines have diesel bikes, I believe they are also available for the
general public. At around 2.2l/100km and a range of 1000km, it makes for
very efficient transport.

If you had an engine properly set up for LPG you wouldn't need to worry
about any fuel switching bullshit. Seriously, switching to ULP for a power
boost?!? You've got to be kidding.

Yes, but you're responding to Hatz, the resident petrol/LPG dual fuel
troll, who thinks that it's cheaper to run the LPG tank dry (after
illegally modifying it to fill past the AFL limit of 80%) then run on
more expensive _petrol_ (which he was carrying on about the price of
earlier in this thread) using a vehicle that is dragging around a
redundant (ie unnecessary weight) petrol system and has an engine that
is not optimised for LPG.
IOW, as clueless as David Z. :-)
