GM Holden has set a new vehicle export record for the company, breaking
through the 60,000-vehicle barrier for the first time in 2005.

The record was driven by GM Holden’s flagship prestige vehicles, Statesman
and Caprice, which broke new markets and established their reputation as
one of the Middle East’s most popular vehicles.

More than 27,300 long wheelbase cars were shipped, more than seven times
the number sold in Australia during the year.

GM Holden sent a total of 60,518 sedans, utes and coupes around the world
in 2005, trumping its previous record of 52,372 set in its 50th anniversary
export year of 2004.

The increase of 8146 vehicles (or almost 16 per cent) came through a
programme exporting to every continent except Antarctica and representing
no fewer than six General Motors brands.
>snip

Vehicles manufactured by the Australian carmaker were sold overseas in 2005
under the GM brands of Chevrolet (Brazil, Middle East, Thailand, Malaysia
and South Africa), Pontiac (United States), Buick (China), GM Daewoo (South
Korea), Vauxhall (United Kingdom) and Holden (New Zealand).
>snip

Pontiac GTO was again in demand in the United States, with 11,729 GTOs
exported in 2005. That brings the number of GTOs exported to the US to
31,548 over three years – about 2.5 times the total number of sales of
Holden Monaro on which the GTO is based.
>snip

The new markets of China and Korea made important contributions to Holden’s
vehicle export tally, with 5976 Buick Royaum and 1878 Daewoo Statesman
models respectively, both based on the Statesman and Caprice vehicles.

Successfull at making money for themselves yes. At building quality cars
for the consumer no. It's all about brands, bogans and marketing. You
could sell pork rolls to the jews or toilet paper to the abbos if it was
marketed right. Pity holden doesn't put more back into research and
development to give the consumer a fairer deal. But then again when
you're selling to the holden market, you can dish out anything and call
it a car. As long as it has the lion on it the bogans go mad over it!
Hopefully it will change when Toyota buys GM and injects some quality
control into Holden. Maybe even give them some guidence to building a
sweet sounding V6 engine. With the large car market diminishing rapidly
they're not gonna be riding the free wave for too much longer. The VE
commodore will probably show if they've realised that or not.

I'll tell you about the Mitsubishi Colt I had a few months ago as a
loaner while I was getting my car serviced. It was peach coloured, zippy
1.5L mivec engine, CVT transmission. It had a fold down rear seat for
carrying furniture too as most small cars do. Also theres a button you
press that makes the mirrors fold in. Cute huh?

So when the fuck are Mitsu going to realise that their old market is
completely dead; and it's time to find a new one? If advertising to bogans
makes 'em money, whether the cars are reliable or not, then why don't Mitsu
get in there and make some moolah?

Mitsubishi could not sell a 380 for $10,000 with a ten year warranty.
If Holden sold a Barina for $10,000 with a ten year warranty; it would be a
new cult car.

Brand image mean anything to you, Pesty?

Easily explained.
GMH make good, powerful, pleasant looking, rear wheel drive cars that
are good to drive and last a long time.

MMAL make shit cars, gutless compared to GMH, butt ugly, FWD cars that
most would be ashamed to be seen in, that start burning oil and falling
apart with half the mileage of a Holden!

Ad to that the abissmal resale value of MMAL vehicles and it is as plain
as day, "What gives" :-)

When did they last make Colts?
I was very happy to have avoided buying one in the late 80s, as they turned
