View Full Version : Sheedy can't coach to win games.

I thank gF for making the following data available. He apparently
sourced it from: Footyfacts PC www.stats.com.au.
Let's assume it is correct. I think they are awesome figures. I am
a qualified and trained scientist. I know how to draw conclusions from
a set of statistical figures. I conclude that: Sheedy does not know how
to coach to win games. I better say it again slowly:
Sheedy does not know how to coach to win games.
I am sure there are many football-knowledgeable and brilliant people
out there. Sheedy, Sheehan, Wilson, senior members of AFL and
committee members footy clubs, please tell me if my deductions are
wrong. Would somebody please draw the attention of the Essendon Footy
Club to this posting.
I really think I should say it again:
Sheedy does not know how to coach to win games
I am not talking about how many games Essendon has won under him, not
about how many premierships, what I am saying is:
Sheedy does not know how to coach to win games

that the world would be a better place for knowing the following:
>I thank gF for making the following data available.
The data is incomplete for the purpose you are needing it for. You
would need to know how many instances there were for each team leading
at half time and at 3/4 time to work out the percentages of instances
that resulted in losses.
>He apparently
>sourced it from: Footyfacts PC www.stats.com.au.
Fancy him sourcing it from his own website.
>Let's assume it is correct. I think they are awesome figures. I am
>a qualified and trained scientist. I know how to draw conclusions from
>a set of statistical figures.
If that were true you would also know that there is not sufficient
statistics from which to glean any meaningful conclusions.
You would need to know how many instances there were of each club
being in the lead at 1/2 and 3/4 time to work out whether or not there
were any anomaly, that shows that Sheedy has coached his club to a
higher than normal percentage of losses after leading at 1/2 or 3/4
time.
You do realise Nicky that water play at Kindergarten does not qualify
you as a scientist.
Your conclusions make a liar out of you.

Which shot you down in flames.

1) LOL
2) (sourced from discussions elsewhere at the moment) "With our loss to
Hawthorn, our record is now 10 losses from our last 44 games decided by
less than a goal since 1990.
Lost 4 out of 5 in finals.
Lost 6 out of 38 in H&A football.
The match on Sunday was Essendon's third H&A loss by less than a goal
in Victoria since 1991. We had one loss in 1991, then we waited 14
years to see another one live in round 2 last year, and now a third on
Sunday."
Sounds like a team who knows how to win games to me!!! Then again, I
imagine your next conclusion will be that without Sheedy we'd have won
44 out of 44.
(Amazing stat -- I know there's a few draws in there, but still --
wow.)

I agree there with you Nicky. I can't undestand all of those posts against
you as the proof is in the pudding. Look how awful they are this season.
Some say they may be good - but still can't finish the game off. Sheedy is a
smart operator, but his days of coaching have been over a long time ago.
He's in too much of a comfort zone and needs to get back to plumbing and
leave the footy coaching to someone who is competant.

Which pudding?
The Magic Pudding? The stats do absolutely nothing to support Nicky's
wild assertion as there is insufficient data to form a meaningful
conclusion.
> Look how awful they are this season.
Awful?
Beat the reigning premier
Beaten by Brisbane in Brisbane by 3 goals
Beaten by the 4th Team by 11 points
Beaten by the 3rd team by 17 points
Beaten by the 5th team by a point
Hardly a disgraceful effort.
>Some say they may be good - but still can't finish the game off.
They have been beaten by better teams and have not been thrashed this
year. There is a lot of younger players and they are without Lloyd.

How long ago?
10 years is a long time!
He's won a flag in that time.

Colin, you truly are a master of spin.
Let's look at it another way.
Beat Sydney, who have been very unimpressive to say the least, and then
beaten by four teams who failrd to make the eight last year, including last
year's 14th and 15th placed teams and this year's 16th placed team.
Disgraceful may be too strong a word but no matter which way you slice and
dice it it's not flash.

Maybe, but that's not much to hang your hat on.
You see I know my team's no good, Essendon supporters are still in denial.
Can't see the Bombers winning many (If any) interstate and vey few against
the better Victorian teams like StKilda and Geelong.
Your best bet for wins will be the likes of Carlton and Richmond, maybe
North at a pinch and perhaps Port, Brisbane and Freo in Melbourne, although
I wouldn't be betting on it if I were you.
There's a bleak few years ahead for you, especially after Hird and Fletcher
hang up the boots, and no more priority picks!
If Hille's your best young prospect as captain that says it all.
