I'm trying to unlock the provider on a Nokia 6610i, to use more than
one sim card. I know where to get the unlock codes, that's not the
problem. They all want me to enter a letter "p" and "w". I've tried
every button on the phone and everything else I can think of to type a
letter instead of a number, but I just keep getting number 7 & 9.

How the heck do you get letters instead of numbers?

Tap the * button several times, just like going through the letters on a
key.

Also... On the unlock website I found, you have to select "GEN" -
what is "GEN" !?

You should probably research all this before you start typing in codes, as
you only get a few attempts.

Yep, thanks. It's quite common for me to search for hours, not find a
solution to things, and then just after I ask for help, find the
answer myself. So I knew if I didn't ask, I probably wouldn't have
found it. ; )

I entered just the first and seventh codes given (suggested by someone
in a google search) then stopped. Later I decided to try one more
code myself and selected "Original" from the "GEN" box at:

http://unlock.nokiafree.org/

.... entered the IMEI number... and the first code given worked.

Then tried to reset the factory settings with a code found here:

http://www.bhatt.id.au/blog/nokia-mobile-phone-service-codes-activate-hidden-features

.... and it asked for a security code, which I found here:

http://nfader.z-host.ru

Whew! Is that enough research? ; )
