Hello,

I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice on a problem I'm
having.

I own a TEAC DV-B420 Set Top Box which I have connected to my Samsung
DVD-V5500 combo unit through RF cables on AV1. The set top box is
brilliant, both the sound and video quality are really good.

However, when I try to record something from the set top box upon
playback the image is black and white. The quality and sound are still
excellent.

I have tried different RF cables but to no avail.

Has anyone else experienced this problem? Any suggestions would be
greatly appreciated.

Many Thanks
Will

Look for a setting for Pal or NTSC - More than likely your machine is set to
NTSC - Switch it to Pal.
Hope this helps

Why are you connecting via RF cables? At the very least you should be using composite. The problem you describe sounds like you are transmitting a different signal (like s-video) from the STB that your DVD-R can't record via the method you are trying.

As mentioned could be a number of problems. First is RF cable.... well if
it's radio frequency then they are designed to pick up interference. Get
yourself AV cables. HDMI best, DVI Good, RGB good, S-Video OK, RCA Fair.
Once you get the proper cable make sure you set top box is set to output
PAL, most TVs these days in Australia will display PAL and NTSC with no
problem, Most video and DVD recorders are designed to only record PAL and
will record a NTSC signal in B&W. Some set top boxes especially if you use a
scart will let you select whether the output signal is PAL, S-Video, RGB etc
try a few combos to see which gives the best picture.

Hi wizardwill,

The other posters made valid suggestions regarding cables and settings.
Try those out first.

However, there is a known problem with these units where they don't
deliver enough signal for colour to be detected by all displays or
recorders.

That problem can therefore lurk until you buy some new piece of
equipment or change the order of cabling. My brother's DV-B420 worked
fine connected directly to his TV but it recorded in B&W when connected
to his VCR.

He took his in to the local TEAC service centre and they fixed the unit
on the spot. Visit http://www.teac.com.au to find out where your one is
or to get a RMA.
