View Full Version : Set Top Box recommendation ?

Hi,
I got a set top box for my parents last year. It worked okay.....at
first. Then it started getting too many freeze frames. Now it doesn't
work at all. :-(
My own fault as it was only a $100 unit. Now I want something better
but would preferably still like to keep the cost closer to $300 than
$600.
Can anyone recommend a worthwhile unit please ?
Regards, John.

I have owned a Wintal X5 for a few years. It is great.
Radio Parts sells them in Melbourne.

Try to get the extra pennies together and get a Topfield 5000pvrt around
$750 street price. You will get a genuine 7 day epg for free as well as the
ability to record 2 programs and watch a previously recorded program at the
same time. It changes the way you view TV completely. btw I'm nearly 70 so
don't think your parents can't handle it!!!

Price is not always an indication of quality.
If it's not working at all and it's still under warranty send back it to be
fixed.
It's possible it could be the antenna system. If you can, try an analogue TV
in the same TV point. If the picture is snowy then that may be the problem.

I agree...Topfield. No other comes near it. If you can go to the 5000pvrt
great, if not do they do some cheaper ones with sort of I think 80gb hd. I
hunted for ages and listened to lots of opinions. The Topfield is
everything I expected and more.

Thanks. Does it have a signal strength indicator ? The faulty unit had
that (before it failed) during setup.

Thanks for the recommendation. I will keep that in mind for myself. My
parents however are older than you and get confused with a STB. :-(

Try a new antenna that does not receive stations below ch7 (analog) (or ch6
digital) Most interference comes in on the low end of the band. Go to
http://www.dba.org.au/newsletter/troubleshooting.asp and read up the
special requirements for digital TV over analog.

It does have a signal strength indicator but I would only use it
as a very rough guide. It goes from zero to 24.1 I have checked
several units at different locations and have never seen a signal
strength higher than 24.1

The transmission can't be improved, what you get, you get. or haven't you
worked that out yet. Its all about the "forward error correction" [FEC] if
the signal is suitable it will be allowed to procede, if not the FEC will
reject it and look for a signal that is suitable. That's how digital works
Dummy.

What I was on about is signal reception - if you have an inadequate antenna
then you are not capturing the maximum signal strength and quality possible.
Therefore before giving up I would investigate a purpose designed antenna
for digital TV like the Fracarro. A friend in the shadow of a large shopping
centre had no analog signal that you could watch, digital was intermittently
ok with lots of audio drop outs and pixilation - he had a very good
standard high gain ch 2 to ch 69 antenna. Replaced it with a Fracarro log
periodic ch6 to ch 40 antenna for $40 and voila 90% signal and quality. So
my point is you can improve on what seems like a desperate situations in
the world of digital transmssions.
Cheers.

Could you be more specific. Where else than the transmitted carrier does the
FEC look?

The forward error correction [FEC] controls the signal quality, . 1/2 2/3
3/4 5/6 7/8 are the rates used.
Your digital receiver [set top box] collects the signal, which unlike an
analogue signal, consists of a series of O's and 1's and depending on the
FEC rate, selects which one is being used three four is the most common,
out of the four signal rates it looks at it will need to select 3 which are
suitable, this is done is milli seconds and is a continuing process, If it
can't find the 3 signals it requires it simply shuts down. Which gives you
a picture or a black screen .. There is no sparkles, faded, of near picture,
and unlike analogue , you have a picture, [which is acceptable to the
receiver] or you have a black screen [the receiver is unable to find a
correct sequence of signals, gets confused and shuts down]

Quick question then; how come I get pixelation and audio crackle at times?

Probably impulse or electrical interference - maybe from your antenna or
maybe from the mains.. fixed mine with a new fracarro antenna

Yes, we *are* aware of and understand this technology.
So what you're saying is if the received signal is very weak it may work or
not work; if the signal is strong it may work or not work .
Using this logic I guess you mean that ultimately digital transmissions may
work with no signal at all [or not].

Hmmm. Reading previous posts in this thread, I thought with digital you
either have good picture or none at all? Isn't that what the FEC is supposed
to do?
I also have a brand new antennae.
