looks like we are going to have to buy our parents a new car
their old XD is just about cactus
they were talking about using equity in their home to buy one but they
can't even afford that being on just the age pension

they need
4cyl wagon that can be converted to lpg

auto as both have trouble with their left feet/legs

has to be low seating , at normal car height above ground so mother can
get in, she has bad knees and hip(which puts most of the normal/small
4wds out)

has to be 4wd or at least AWD as they live on the side of a hill with
steep gravel drivway that gets too slippery for 2wd in the wet

I was thinking of something like a Subi liberty or early Forrester

any other suggestions
we will only have about $10,000 to spend which would include the lpg
conversion

I would say a subaru having owned one i will defend them to the death on
reliability (i had an '83) but never really heard of someone putting gas on
one. Certainly not a typical 4x4 but it went to fraser island & to a lot of
places where clearance wasnt a big problem & if not i used to get a faster
run up. They are solidly built little cars.

I had the same
went everywhere on fraser
the NPWS track info stated that some tracks would be impassable with
Subis, I say bullshit

I got bogged twice
once because some goose, in a landcruiser of all things, was bogged, I
stopped up off the track so I could get going again, but th dickhead
from the shop(turtle beach is it?) forced me to move back onto the track
so he could get past, of course the only place I could stop then was in
the middle of the track so I couldn't get going again, this idiot then
had to come back and tow me out and then instead of just towing to the
hight spot as I requested he knew better and towed me to the concrete
pad at the shop, he then insisted he should tow all the way to the beach.
"Yeah I don't think so" I said
"Well if you get stuck crossing that sand your on your own" was his reply
and he watched with that smug look on his face which sort of changed as
I dissapeared along the track to the beach

the other time was on the track around indian head, I had a killer
migraine and went into a dip with not enough speed to come out the other
side

a simple matter of jacking up the front and rear and filling in sand
under the wheels and flatterning the centre of the track for about 20
metres and away I went

the modular design of the older subis made them so easy to work on
you could remove the entire body from the running gear in about 2 hours

I see many sedans converted to 4WD

pics of mine are here

this is after I rebuilt it, lifted it 3inches and fitted 14inch wheels

Or the later Corolla AWD.
Extremely good car, those - and certainly fits the criteria you set
up.
They're available in two models - difference is the trim and mags.
Wouldn't bother with the LPG conversion though - since they don't use
much fuel anyway.
You need to find either a low miler or a correctly serviced example.
Lost of CV boots and stuff that need to be watched over and repaired
rapidly to save bigger expenses later.
IIRC they had a radiator recall early on, and there needs to be a
record of that associated with the car.
My bet is that you'll have to pay a little extra for an auto, as it'll
probably have to be the SR version.

Don't know what you'll find for that price.
I'd just stick with petrol on a small 4cyl, you'll never see payback.

Not worried about whether we will see a saving with LPG as we will be
paying so the parents can have super cheap transport

sure the small 4cyls don't use much fuel, but it would still cost around
$70 to fill some of them
so a saving of $20-$30 each fill would be good for them

they also live 25 mins hwy drive from the nearest town with a shopping
centre
