been around for years
people think they are Harley trikes
they are VW rear ends(engine and gearbox included) adapted to chopper
front ends to make the trike
I'd hate to be the one sitting where the power pole hits when they lose
control

Not sure of the current rules, but because they are based on a VW rear end,
they could be registered as cars. This meant no helmet needed, but you did
need a seatbelt. This loophole may have since been closed.

In Victoria, *all* trikes are registered as three wheeled cars, and you
don't need a bike licence to drive one.

Why is it worse on one of them than a normal bike, other than being
pinned/crushed behind more weight I suppose?

They're probably a little safer than your average bike in terms of better
able to be seen by other road users, but aside from that there's not much in
it between a trike and a regular bike.
One peculiarity they do have is their cornering ability, or lack thereof.
When cornering moderately quickly, they tend to lift the inside wheel off
the ground. It can scare the crap out of you if you're not used to it, but
if you are it can be fun seeing how far down the road you can get with a
rear wheel 2 feet in thr air :)
There's a group of bike enthusiasts out Geelong way who make HD trikes, and
they do an excellent job. You bascially take your bike into them, and they
fabricate the entire rear half including chassis, suspension, rear axle and
bodywork depending on your requirements. Their rear axle configuration is
pretty neat. They use a Ford Falcon solid rear axle that's cut down and the
hemisphere converted to chain drive so it connect to a standard HD gearbox,
and they employ a 12 volt electric motor coupled to a gear on the hemisphere
for reverse. Gives you a nice little electric reverser which allows you to
retain your five speed gearbox.
They are strictly a small "club" business of around half a sozen guys or so,
but they're so successful that they were exporting about 20 a year to Japan
at one stage.

A weekend market was just finishing up nearby in one of the tunnels
under the Harbour Bridge (on land of course I mean) at Milson's

My ex next door neighbour had two of them
although his were not the VW conversion types but made from Kawasaki Z1300s
they remove the rear forks and fit a Ford rear axle, one had coil
springs but his last one had airbags
they were single pillion not those side by side types
he wanted them for better stability when towing his trailer

I meant if the pole Missed the front of the bike
the person sitting off to the side would be the first thing to hit the pole
or even worse the trike & an oncoming car get too close to each other
