Hi all,

having problems with my AU ute. main problem i think is i don't know
anything about cars.

i thought the battery was flat, been having a problem with the door not
fully closing and the interior light staying on.

charged the battery, headlights work interior lights everything electric
works, but when i turn the key i dont even hear the starter motor kick in.
I dont have a diagram for the fuses so dont know which one is which (if
anyone has one they can email i'd appreciate it). if anyone has ideas or
tests i can do please email simon.brown@internode.on.net

Look, I know it's not cheap, but has someone mentioned something
called "petrol" ?

One possibility is the battery is holding enough charge to power the
lights, but not the starter motor (which draws more current than the
other functions).

This can be caused by two things:
1. You didn't charge it enough.
2. The battery is now f*****d, and it won't hold sufficient charge.

Thanks fonz. had been thinking that but don't know much about cars so didn't
know if i was on the right track. will charge it over night and see how it
goes in the morning.

want to learn about mechannics and stuff but don't know where to start.

Thanks again

Does it wind over at all, or does it just click?
Also check the water inside the battery. That'll fuck it real good if it
runs out.

Have you tried operating the starter with the headlamps switched on...
or, more to the point, what happens if you do?

Does the starter whir or click?
if it whirs a quick smack on the solenoid might fix it.
If it clicks its not getting enough power
If it does nothing somethings fuxored.

Might sound a little obvious, but (assuming that it is auto) check that
the transmission is in park or neutral.

Better still, walk around the car.
If it has more than 0 blue ovals, you've found the problem. :-)

That's cruel. I just hope he has a good enough credit rating for the
mortgage on his next tank.

Even if it does appear to be in Park or Neutral, give the gear stick a run
through all gears and then put it back in P.... its not unusual for the
starter inhibitor to play up. Had a few mates I've saved with this
suggestion over the years.

The wanker called David Springthorpe waffled on about something he obviously
knows nothing about and who again obviously doesn't read the original post
sprouted:

Simon, take no notice of wankers who suggest that it might be no petrol,
others ask if there is a noise from the starter, even though you have
described nothing coming from the starter at all, someone else has come up
with a better solution and has suggested that you look at the placement of
the gearstick.
turn the key to the start position and while holding it there, move the
gear stick from Park to drive and see if there is a movement of the starter,
if not, there is a fuse and also a fusible link, but if you know nothing
about cars, then get a visiting home mechanic to come and have a look

Having experienced a dead battery in an AU, I discovered an odd little
thing...

After charging the battery, the starter doesn't operate first time. I
thought "oh shite, something's wrong". By trial and error, I discovered
that when this happens, you need to leave the ignition in the ON position
for a while (probably 20 secs) then try cranking. It seems to be some
sort of protection against cranking with a flat battery...

I actually feel for you.....I had starting problems with the Astra a
few months ago and I thought there might be battery / starter motor /
alternator problem, also various warning lights coming on that
shouldn't have. Took it to the Ultra Tune guy I had it serviced once
and he said some computer settings (don't know much about these) were
amiss, he re-set them and told me to monitor how the car went. I've
had no starting problems since but the Traction Control warning light
still usually comes on after a cold start-up but not after I drive it
for a while, then turn off and re-ignite (so to speak).....

Also ran out of petrol once in the old Camira near the middle of The
Spit Bridge - not peak hour but still embarrassing.....

Have you tried a jump start? I ran my AUIII battery flat 3 or 4 times
because my boot didn't close properly (and for some reason the "all
lights off after an hour" function doesn't work with the boot lamp),
and after that it wouldn't hold a charge. Interior lamps and central
locking worked, but the starter solenoid just clicked uselessly when I
tried to start it. This was about 6 hours after a jump start and good
drive so the battery *should* have been fully charged.

The stater motor is probably the most demanding electrical component in
the car, so a damaged battery may be able to supply lamps and
accessories fine but then balk when connected to the starter. If it
jump starts fine then you probably need to replace the batt.
