Well it has been happening again. BB6 has all the teenagers paying $6
each to wank off over as much as they want, making data services next to
impossible from the time school is out until the early hours of the morning.

I complained early in the week without any satisfaction to the curry
munchers. Then last night I rang them up again and they tried to give
me all the bullshit spiel about power cycling the phone, trying the SIM
in another phone etc. etc. and I went right off tap at the curry muncher
telling him that 3 didn't trust him to fix anything and all he could do
is email the techs.

He refused to admit he was in India and then I said I wanted to talk to
a 3 Manager in Australia and he said NO but he would let me speak to a 3
Manager in India! What a fucking idiot. I then said that I was going
to contact the TIO and go to another 3G Carrier next week.

He said one would call me back shortly, about 10 minutes later he rang
me back and instructed me to turn power cycle my phone, then try to
connect again and he would call back to see that it worked.

I did that and it miraculously worked, when he called again I advised
him that it was now working. He said he had refreshed my profile.
Sounds like shit to me, I suspect that there are alternative servers
they have tat don't get fucked over by all the wankers watching Big Brother.

My suggestion is that anyone having the same problems call the curry
munchers and abuse the shit out of them and demand they fix it or you
will find another 3G carrier as they aren't the only ones in Australia now!

Don't blame the call-centre staff. It's not their fault the are
insufficiently trained, or work for incompetent management.

Call yourself a saint??

The fact is they read idiot sheets that are full of garbage, you try to
ask them to do something and they can't or won't. The only way to get
through to them is threaten them with the TIO and porting.

What got me agro is the fact that they deny repeatedly there is a
problem due to Big Brother and it happens every time. The simple fact
of the matter is they cannot cope with the demand for bandwidth yet they
continue to push this garbage over their network to the detriment of
regular users.

It was bloody obvious that they have other servers that don't suffer
from the abuse, whether they are set aside for business customers or
themselves or whoever is irrelevant as it took me blowing my stack to do
something about it.

May I ask what it is that you use these data services for? I'm still
trying to come to grips with the fact that people would prefer to use a
mobile phone to access the internet instead of a computer.

Who said anything about using your phone? 3G data connection _via_ your
phone or one of the new UMTS/WiFi CardBus cards.

If I am away from home for several days I like to check emails, I also
like to check in on 3's News and Information package to keep up to date
on news and weather.

As Paul states many people connect their computers to 3's data service
when they are out and about either via a PCMIA/UMTS card or using their
phone as a data modem. Sure not the cheapest option to access the net
but when you are away from home or the office there aren't many options.

I am still have no problems with data access since my argument with 3
Customer Care in India last week! So if anyone else is having problems
due to the excessive Big Brother usage (abuse) then ring 3 Customer Care
and demand they resolve it for you.

Fairy nuff, I s'pose. What does such a service cost?

I can understand people who need to dial up to connect to office email
etc. when travelling. But wouldn't it be easier or cheaper, particularly
when there is no 3G coverage where you may be, to use a normal modem in
the laptop and connect via your hotel or motel's phone service?

I remember years ago, a mate who used his Nokia in data mode to connect
his laptop to his ISP when out and about. It used to cost him a fortune.
Not sure what the costs are today, though.

As for using the service to catch up with the news, etc., it's generally
cheaper to either buy a newspaper, listen to the news bulletins on the
radio or even on a TV in a pub or motel or whatever.

These days, any good high class hotel will have either some kind of wired
internet (e.g. an Ethernet jack in the room) or 802.11 WiFi wireless.
Even cheaper hotels will often have some kind of internet these days (e.g.
WiFi in certain lounge/business/bar areas or even internet cafe functions)

Hmm, $3 per month for 3's News/finance/weather Info pack. $3 will not
even buy three newspapers. What would I do for the rest of the month? I
suppose I could read it in the newsagents until they kicked me out.

You get the same whether the call centre person is here in Oz or
overseas somewhere.

Had a problem with Bigpond ISDN. Call BP help. They run through a spiel
starting with "do you have your Windows 98 disc handy?".

You know that you're gonna get the runaround when they start with that.
And when they ask what firewall or some other product you have running
and you say, nothing like that, they come to a screaming halt, as their
checklist can't cope with it. or that I have some program installed that
they don't know anything about.

My problem was that the email server was down and I merely asked when it
would be back up. It had been unavailable all day and I'd finally called
mid arvo.

Arguing that I could access my other email account on a different ISP
made no difference - the droid had to follow the checklist instead of
enquiring internally if the email server was up or unavailable.

In the end the trick is to play along. Yep, I've run the install
process, yep, done that. Yep, that's done. Nope, still not working. All
the while, you're sitting there playing Solitaire or something.

And don't get me started when I tried to get a fault logged when the
ISDN service would only connect on one channel, and that one of the two
phone lines (a part of the two channels) was also unavailable.

Tech came out, check my equipment etc. He then calls Telstra (no direct
connection to the local exchange for him either) gets put on hold, etc.
Speaks to the exchange people. Can't find any fault, etc. Then ends up
going to the exchange to check the equipment. Guess what? A relay had
failed to unlatch after a call, probably made or received a week
earlier, thus making one of the channels unavailable.

This issue took nearly two weeks to resolve. Major hurdle was getting
past the intial call centre people, as they were convinced that my setup
was the problem.

(See, you got me started...)

What happens if someone sends you a large attachment. Do you receive the
email to the phone or are you using webmail or similar?

Thanks everyone for all the replies.

Emjaye, my phone downloads the headers and then I decide whether to
retrieve the email then or when I get home. That way it doesn't run up
the costs.
