Dear all;
I have tried Linux more than once, but I always needed to go back to
windows, I hate windows, but the problem that most of my programs do
not have a linux edition.
So is there any suggestions or steps to be a good Linux user in the
first place, then how to solve the above problem.
thank you inadvace for your replies....

What are the "programs" you are dependent upon?
If there are acceptable replacements, then life will be made a lot
easier for you.
For example, unless you are a heavy user of MS Office, the latest (2.x)
version of OpenOffice is pretty good.
List them out, and we should be able to help.
Just an aside, I am _not_ strictly speaking a Linux user, but I've been
a UNIX user and developer since the early 1980s, (and a Linux developer
since whenever RedHat 5.2 came out), at the moment my main server at
home is running Solaris 10, with the motherboard about to be replaced
with an AMD64 of some description. A lot of the "usual" things people
do with their computers pass me by, I tend to fuss about things like
compilers and libraries and strange administrative tools, rather than
"word processors" and "single user databases" (I've _written_ (as part
of a team) heavy-duty multi-user databases).
And the laptop I'm typing this from dual-boots XP and Solaris 10.
Cheers,
Gary B-)

You have to accept that everything you do is going to be a compromise if you
insist on using Linux.
Dual boot is an option, or use wine but not everything will work and it's
too much rooting around for my liking.

My wife wanted dearly to move to linux, but she also needed to use a couple
of windows apps. There are various options there, like win4lin (which she
used for quite some time) and crossover office (which she uses now). With
crossover she simply runs the win apps she needs right on the linux desktop
like a native app. Unfortunately not all app will run so YMMV.
For everyday tasks, there are linux apps to do most. The majority of win
apps that people use on a regular basis seem to be repair and anti malware
utilities...
Normal apps are there, mail, browsing, news, office apps (openoffice) and so
forth - and crossover allows you to run MS office and IE if you really want
to... And photoshop, tho I prefer the gimp.
Dual boot a while anyway. There is no need to move completely for no real
reason...

That's something of a point of view, but to some extent true. But then many
things are a compromise in some way and with windows you compromise
security and need to take care where you surf and what email (or picture)
you open. 'Everything' is not a compromise in linux of course, and linux
users can use email, usenet and the web the same as anyone. Linux (like
even a mac) is just different. People come to linux expecting it to be
windows. It's not. It's linux. The tools are there in linux to do
everything you need to do on a PC. They are just different tools.

Again it's a point of view. I only use linux on the desktop, same with the
wife and daughters. No rooting around with antivirus and antispyware and
all the rest. Stable and secure and just does the job. For me it was
windows that was to much rooting around which is why I avoided it as much
as possible over the years and prefers other OS's like OS/2 and linux...

Three answers,
1. WINE from www.winehq.com will allow many programs
to run within Linux. Free program.
2. Crossover - link on the WINE website is a much heavier
commercial expansion of WINE and worth looking at if your
programs will not run in WINE. I dont know the cost.
3. Cedega from www.transgaming.com is similar to WINE
but aimed specificly at the gaming community and is much
better. They also work hard to keep it current and
compatible with the latest games and gaems upgrades.
Cost is US$5/6 per month.
I have both Wine and Cedega on my Linux machines and
the Windows based games play better in Cedega / Linux
than on MS Win XP Pro.

I think your main (if not only choices apart from using an equivelant)
are.....
1. Use an emulator such as WINE, Win4Lin etc or
2. Use VMWare (I'm not sure of any competing programs) which allows you
to put basically any operating system within any other OS. So if you are
running linux with VMware installed, you create a new VMWare profile for
Windows XX and then install windows (as would normally on a PC) onto the
computer. You can then boot into Windows XX and install whatever
programs you need whilst under linux. This is probably what I might
eventually have to do unless MYOB and a few other progs I use will work
under WINE.

Months. Exactly the point. I haven't had any problems with the XP box here
lately either, tho it is behind a linux firewall and it doesn't use OE (r
do email at all) or IE (hardly any browsing)... If you watch yourself with
windows you can stay clean most of the time with just the odd infection if
you do the wrong thing.
The linux boxes on the other hand have never had any infection. Ever. And
I've been using linux for over 10 years. And these have been just default
installs that were not even behind a firewall for many years.
So that was my main reason to shift toward linux. Stability and security.

Yes, that was very well done, comparing windows to all versions of unix and
a 100's of linuxes... Then adding firefox et al bugs to the *nix side only
even thought they run on windows as well... Very nice piece of FUD :)
Meanwhile in the real world...
How many windows users out there running more than one anti-malware
application? :)
I know I keep the win box here behind a nice safe firewall... One that gets
several hits per minute from infected win boxes out on the net...
